It is these allegations that the police are said to be investigating.
At the time, the bruising was said to be consistent with her having tried desperately to get back into the dinghy.

In 1981, Wagner was pretty 'high profile' because he was, at the time, starring in the hugely popular Hart To Hart - he was considered pretty 'squeaky clean'; naturally, he wouldn't want to lose that reputation - it would have finished his career.

    It makes you wonder..........

I've always wondered why the name 'Wagner' is pronounced as it appears in Robert's case, but the Composer Wagner is pronounced as Vargner, any ideas why anyone?

    One's American, one's German.

And kept quiet about it for 30 years? That seems unlikely - or suspicious.

Yes, but the thing is why do we in english speaking countries say it as Vargner and not as it appears was what I was wondering, though I suppose one could say the same about Beethoven I guess.

I'm inclined to agree with this theory in the main, though perhaps in the circumstances, due to the revelations of the yacht skipper, it would perhaps have to be investigated. I must say I'm very surprised that he should keep it a secret for thirty years and then suddenly decide to publish it in a book! Not! He couldn't tell the truth at the time and yet suddenly for cash he decides to spill the beans! Whether there is any truth in what he says or not, he didn't do Natalie any favours did he? Shame on him.

Because we know how to pronounce German names properly?

I caught part of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure on TV the other day and that reminded me of their mispronunciation of names like Beethoven. But does anyone mispronounce names like that except for comic effect.

As for Robert Wagner, anyone can pronounce their own name however they want. The normal rules of English pronunciation (and all the normal exceptions to those rules) don't apply to real names, people or places.

What about those modern dance troupes the Cholmondleys (pronounced "Chumleys") and the Featherstonehaughs (pronounced "Fanshaws")?
They are both based on British family names where the pronunciation doesn't bear much relation to how they are spelt

Point taken Steve, it's like the girls name Siobhan that's pronounced Shivonne, baffling!

Back to the topic, Robert looks remarkably like Ian Carmichael these days I reckon.
