Mind you, Kathleen Byron had eyes you could drown in as well

That's in Hampstead, isn't it, Mark? It's interesting that he was attached enough to England to presumably request that his body should be brough back here. And while I'm no expert on gravestones, is it common to have both names given? Thanks for the pics.

Yes, thanks for the pics Mark. It's good to see that his admirers are still tending the grave. That's at St. John's-at-Hamstead

Do we know who put it up? I believe his partner committed suicide soon after his death (or am I thinking about someone else?). Did he still have family in Austira?

I did read that his partner had killed himself not long after his death. I'm not sure whether this was the Norwegian chap he was linked with in the '40s – if so, it would suggest it was a long-term relationship. (One of the tragedies of the taboos re: homosexuality in those alarmingly recent but benighted days was that it could be very difficult for bereaved partners to get the support, on all levels, that a straight widow/er might expect.)

I'm not sure about whether he has any surviving family. He is said to have been part-Jewish, which (together with being gay) was why he got out of Germany and Austria when he did. He may well have lost relatives in the Holocaust.

He was a wonderful actor, in German, French and English, and deserves to be much better known these days. He's one of my all-time favourites. And I don't think one can underestimate his courage in playing an implicitly gay hero in The Red Shoes in 1948. (Boris is my movie-world ideal "wise older brother/uncle" character.)

"Trust me, I'm a doctor...!"

You're welcome Steve and Captain Waggett, several tourists were also visiting St. John's also, since I last visited plaques in both Graveyards have been erected with the locations of well-known persons such as John Constable, Hugh Gaitskell, and Kay Kendall (who is opposite Anton), Joan and Jackie Collins Mother Elsa is also there, her grave is the second left in the pic to Anton's with the Angel on it
