Wauvvv... all my respect to this Johannes Heester, mentioned at the beginning of this thread. About two month ago i started a similar thread at imdb under the name of Kirk Douglas. So far we found out that Charles Lane was the oldest actor, with his 102 years, but Johannes Heester of course wins this competition. Could he maybe be the only actor still alive, who performed in silent movies (not regarding the Mel Brooks movie :) ) ?

Not even close. In terms of male actors, Mickey Rooney (currently appearing on the stage in England) started in silent comedies; if you wish to include actresses, Diana Serra Cary (AKA Baby Peggy, under which name she was a prolific star) is enjoying an active retirement in San Francisco, where she writes books on the silent era; and just tonight I bade farewell to the lovely Jean Darling, the Glamourous Blonde of the silent Our Gang films, currently living and also writing in Dublin, where she will return tomorrow having been guest of honour at our annual silent comedy festival here in Bristol.

Roy Dotrice who will be 85 in May is currently playing John Aubrey in his one man show Brief Lives (which is directed by Partick Garland) in theatres down south before moving to the capital.

Patrick Garland directed The Snow Goose and is married to Alexandra Bastedo.

Roy Dotrice OBE does seem to be one of those who has slipped under the radar, concentrating mainly on theatre.

Sam Beazley's film career may have only started fairly recently but he has been on the West End stage for more than 70 of years (until at least 2005) - he was Player Queen in Gielgud's 1931 Hamlet and Paris in the Gielgud/Olivier/Ashcroft Romeo and Juliet.

Michael Medwin was in the last Regent's Park Open Air season as one of the mechanicals in the Dream.

Smile Oldest living veterans

Hi, which five actors/actresses would you say are the oldest living currently? (They can include retired ones) and which one would be your favourite?

I know there's many 80 (and 90) plussers fortunately still around, such as Herbert Lom, Googie Withers, John McCallum and Betty Driver who celebrates her 88th Birthday in June, I'm sure fellow members will add many more........Googie and Betty have always been, and still are joint favourite!

Got a letter from Martin Benson a couple of months ago, regarding some research I was doing. He must be around 90... Extremely versatile character actor too.

Michael Gough is 94. I think he's pretty much retired now though...
