Default David McCallum

I've just noticed that there are no threads for this immensely talented actor, so I shall make one for him.

Even though most of his film roles are co-starring or supporting David still delivers magnificent performances each and every time. He is a wonderful man to watch and he brings much charisma, enthusiasm and dedication to the roles he gets issued.

I haven't seen any Man from U.N.C.L.E. episodes but if they are ever re-run I will try to catch them. One notable achievement comes from his performance in Mosquito Squadron. A poor man's remake of 633 Squadron chock full of stock footage from the infinitely better predecessor, David still chimes in with an exceptional piece of acting that makes the film worth watching just to see him.

David also excels at playing villains. In the Heartbeat episode Arms and the Man (a contender for my favourite episode) he plays a deranged army nut who keeps crates and crates of illegal weapons, ammunition, explosives and other assorted novelties. His final scenes, where he is dressed in full military parade uniform are especially creepy and reveal the true depths of his madness.

It's pleasing to see that David is still keeping active with his role in NCIS also. May more acting appearances come his way in the future.

My favourite McCallum roles are:

Illya Kuryakin (The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - if only because it's his most famous)
Ron Cooper (Heartbeat - Arms and the Man)
Lt Cmdr Eric Ashley-Pitt "Dispersal" (The Great Escape)
Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (NCIS)
Squadron Leader Quint Monroe (Mosquito Squadron)

Believe it or not I saw him in Run For Your Wife - quite a nimble farce actor he was !

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

Watch out for him in Hell Drivers as Stanley Baker's younger brother.

And not forgetting the Invisible Man!

It's a great shame there are too many contractual issues preventing the commercial release of the television series Colditz onto DVD.

We do have him in Sapphire & Steel though...

I know him from "The Great Escape".

Great movie and great part.

"He means it. I'm sure he does. It's a question of face, pure and simple. He can't give in."

He's still great in NCIS - good to see him in regular employment, though he doesn't half lookmlike Sylvester McCoy these days!

He was great as Ilya Kuryakin (or however you spell it). It was a kind of under-stated joke in the series, I always thought, that he was drop-dead gorgeous......... yet it was always lantern-jawed Napoleon Solo, who got the girls........ But then I wasn't a girl........

Critics who claim America is bigoted should take note that they made their Cold War secret agent a Russian. For the Yanks it wasn't where you were from, it was about what side you were on........

Who would call their Agency THRUSH nowadays!!.........

He became huge in America. I've got some features on him in that celebrity heyday. He was quite an item with his wife and children and her paintings in the magazines of the day. Some are quite poignant because they refer to his wife developing her painting skils with Charlie Bronson..............

There's another big feature about MacCallum and his ongoing friendship with a disabled girl fan - she looks to be blind but the article isn't that explanatory. There was a similar one about Robert Vaughan and a family that he befriended. Hopefully both stories were true.

It was always an event when you spotted MacCallum in films and TV progs after UNCLE. That show was probably bigger in Britain than any ITC show, but is strangely forgotten nowadays. Possibly it was a bit camp - but then being camp hasn't stopped The Avengers still being very popular. I'd like to take a look at it again, just out of curiosity.

Have you seen Kevin Macdonald's documentary My Enemy's Enemy (2007) about Klaus Barbie and how he helped the Americans in their interrogation techniques with what he'd learned as a Nazi fighting the French resistance?
