He was great as Ilya Kuryakin (or however you spell it). It was a kind of under-stated joke in the series, I always thought, that
he was drop-dead gorgeous......... yet it was always lantern-jawed Napoleon Solo, who got the girls........ But then I wasn't a girl........
Critics who claim America is bigoted should take note that they made their Cold War secret agent a Russian. For the Yanks it wasn't where you were from, it was about what side you were on........
Who would call their Agency THRUSH nowadays!!.........
He became huge in America. I've got some features on him in that celebrity heyday. He was quite an item with his wife and children and her paintings in the magazines of the day. Some are quite poignant because they refer to his wife developing her painting skils with Charlie Bronson..............
There's another big feature about MacCallum and his ongoing friendship with a disabled girl fan - she looks to be blind but the article isn't that explanatory. There was a similar one about Robert Vaughan and a family that he befriended. Hopefully both stories were true.
It was always an event when you spotted MacCallum in films and TV progs after UNCLE. That show was probably bigger in Britain than any ITC show, but is strangely forgotten nowadays. Possibly it was a bit camp - but then being camp hasn't stopped
The Avengers still being very popular. I'd like to take a look at it again, just out of curiosity.
