It's not just those things (although I don't recall too many silly faces, exasperated faces from Basil yes, but not abstract silly ones), it's the whole package. The eccentric characters, the snobbery, the relationships between the regulars, the absurdity of situations which are often so like real life. The violence stretches back to the days of Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges and even Tom and Jerry. I find it really funny in the same way I do with the others I mentioned .... every time I watch it, I have to laugh!

Bats.

ps - when dubbed into Spanish, Manuel is Italian!

Steve
He likes to analyse other peoples comedy but is more reluctant to analyse why his own recent attempts at an American sitcom (which he relentlessly promotes above British sitcoms) have always failed.

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

Because it is? (Although that's far from all of it)
Can you identify exactly why anything that you think is funny, is funny?
Comedy is usually impossible to analyse and is very personal.

Something that one person thinks is hilarious won't tickle the funny bone of someone else

Default A slice of cleese

Hi Bats,
Had a good chuckle when I read your comment below.
If it's dubbed into German how do they handle the rather prickly issue of the war -and who "started it"!

" ps - when dubbed into Spanish, Manuel is Italian!"

I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore!

Steve
I agree 110%.

And I would just add that my humour has changed considerably over the years. Some things that used to have me rolling on the floor with laughter don't any more and other things that I wouldn't have found funny years ago DO make me laugh now.
I think our sense of humour grows up with us.

It would be interesting to know, but I can't find any info on that.

According to Andrew Sachs in a recently transmitted programme on catchphrases on C4 they simply do not order that programme when buying the series.

As always, the best solution is always the simplest!

All I know is that I think Blackadder was, is and always will be one of the funniest shows I have ever seen in my life. And then when he did Mr. Bean. I couldn't even believe it was the same man. Mr. Bean leaves me flat. I just don't get what is funny at all.
For me they are so unfunny I am actually embarrassed for the poor man for even making them.

I am also in the Flowery Twats camp. I think they are brilliant too.

…time is short. So you gotta ask yourself: Are you a fighter, Fish Queen, or are you zombie food?

Well, millions of people would wholeheartedly disagree with you (I'm one!) - but that is the wonderful thing about comedy: there's something for everybody.

Oh yes indeed and it would be very boring if we all liked the same thing.

I agree. The world would be a much more boring place if everyone shared my good taste.
