Default Whats happened to Rowan Atkinson?

Hi.

Does anyone know what Rowan Atkinson is up to these days? Blackadder is one of my favorite comedies of all time, Mr Bean was quite funny and Not the 9 `O clock news was great in its day. I heard after the Bean movies Rowan had some sort of breakdown, I dont know how bad it was though.

Fagins girl.

He was certainly being treated for depression following the critical failure of his film Johnny English in 2003, but the following year accepted substantial undisclosed damages and a public apology over newspaper allegations that he was on the edge of a breakdown.

I don't know what he's working on right now though. Perhaps someone else...?

There appears to be nothing in the pipeline at present. Then again, Rowan Atkinson doesn't do a lot of work these days.

His last venture Mr. Bean's Holiday (2007) was a shocker so I'm not surprised that he's keeping his head down for awhile.

He lives not so very far from me, and I know some people who do some PR work for him. They've not mentioned any problems but, there again, perhaps they are being discrete.

He is a very private man offscreen - I dont think he has ever done an interview. As regards what he is doing now, I think saloon car racing takes up a lot of his time. I saw him at goodwood in 2006 racing his Jaguar MkVII. As one of you said, he is now phenominally rich and so doesnt need to work if he doesnt need to!

Apart from some of the Blackadder episodes, he has never managed to make me laugh, I'm afraid.

He is one of those people, like John Cleese and Stephen Fry, that I find more sad than funny. "Tears of a clown", etc.

P.S. It was when I saw Cleese making party political broadcasts for the SDP, that I realised he fell into a new definition of "Comedian" !

John Cleese seems to survive by doing voice over work on animated films these days.

Last thing I saw him in was 'The Art Of Football From A to Z' (2006) which for me was a letdown. It was sad to see him struggling to put some humor into the film.

I don't think John Cleese has managed to be funny since he started trying to analyse comedy.

The downfall of several comedians ... Hancock also suffered that fate.

It's a matter of grammar and the tenses showing when you are talking about.
John Cleese was funny
John Cleese isn't funny
John Cleese might be funny in the future

Just because somebody is funny at one point in their life doesn't mean to say they'll continue to be funny for the rest of their life.

Cleese was definitely funny when he did I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers. But then he seemed to lose the art

Thumbs down

I have a pet theory:
Atkinson, Cleese, Fry, etc., attended Oxford or Cambridge universities, and they have never shaken off the idea that they are the cleverest people of their generation. They think they should be the "leaders".

So after several years of doing silly walks and pulling grotesque faces, they suddenly ask people to take them seriously ! And so they pop up leading political campaigns, making documentaries about health issues, etc.

To me this is just as absurd as enormously rich rock stars organising concerts to "raise awareness" about poverty. I don't accept the idea that these are the moral arbiters for our times.
