I hope some of you, or at least one of you, will be taping George Cole's interview. To my knowledge you can't get BBCtv4 here in New York City. Also has anyone come across reasonably priced copies of "Dance & Skylark" all i've ever seen is very expensive copies ?

I paid US$30 (approx £15) for my copy. That was in April 2002 and I bought it via AbeBooks.com

They've currently got 9 copies on offer from US$90 (plus postage) to US$425 which does seem a tad excessive. Has inflation really been that high over the last 6 years?

All I can suggest is that you set it up as a Want on ABE and they'll email you every time someone offers one for sale.

It was. What a delightful hour. I hadn't known he was adopted. He was quite funny when he remarked he couldn't have been adopted by his friends, the Sims, because he'd already been adopted.... and one can't be adopted twice!

I thought Cole's interview was one of Mark Lawsons better ones. GC was obviously slightly wary of being questioned and often became monosyllabic but when ML could get him to open up he gave some fascinating answers about the craft acting and an actors life in general.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

I thought he was being very careful to not reveal too much about himself. It would be very interesting to hear him and Dennis Waterman comparing their experiences as successful child actors who made the transition to adult work. It's an excellent series and Lawson seems to have done his research.

Just finished watching "Cottage to Let" (TCM is running a retrospective of Leslie Bank's works) in which George Cole played a Cockney evacuee being dumped off at a fostering billet. Reminded me of what it was like to be a similar stray on 1 September, 1939. But the movie is a bit of a dog what with umpteen German sympathisers running around loose, including John Mills of all people. Some pretty silly plot faults. But Wally Patch had a full-length supporting role which was unusual, the full-length, I mean, not the role. He otherwise invariably played taxi drivers or street vendors for a few seconds.

I like Cottage to Let. It's a very entertaining film with some good performances, and it was the first B/W film The Boy Wonder ever watched. He loved it, especially George Cole.

"Cottage to Let" was also on TMC this week. (They were running a retrospective on Leslie Banks fillums.) George Cole played an evacuee being dumped on a lady of the manor. Brought back memories for me, also a stray on 1 September, 1939, forced on an unwilling retired school master and his wife. But the movie was a dog, full of Nazy sympathisers - John Mills as a German agent! - and silly plot lines. Pretty difficult to imagine Alistair Sim as a British counter-intelligence bloke passing himself off as a German villian. But I liked it in 1941 when I didn't know better.

Aw! I love Cottage to Let, partly because George Cole's performance is superb (and Leslie Banks is very droll too) and partly because I always forget which side Alastair Sim is on. As for John Mills as a Nazi - surely the Germans would much rather have recruited him than Paul Henreid or Paul Lukas? It's one of those films that I'm glad Film4 shows 354 times a year.

Blast! I missed this interview. I recall that a few years ago George Cole gave an interview to Micheal Parkinson on his Sunday morning radio programme. I was more than a little surprised that Mr. Cole did seem to verge on the monosyllabic.
