Hopefully enjoying his own life, while he's still got it.

I liked his song about looking like his dad.

I had the pleasure (I think !) of attending both the stag night and wedding of Ollie and Josephine in 1985. He was'nt a close friend, in fact I was only introduced to him 2 weeks before he married but we shared a common interest, namely alcohol and I got to know him quite well.
I admired him as an actor but off screen he could be dangerously unpredictable. By his own admission he had a low boredom threshold and liked to create what he called a 'happening'. This could manifest itself in several ways and in the short time that I knew him I witnessed quite a few challenges to other brawny guys, either a strength test or a full blown fight. On a one to one level he was a very sensitive, nature loving, well read intellect. Basically the guy had a lust for life and lived and loved to extremes. I do miss him and I remember fondly gurgling away gallons of his homemade scrumpy in his barn at Oakwoodhill. Aah....

That's probably the best claim to fame I've heard in ages! :)

I always had the impression that he was a bit of a monster, but your explanation about him creating a 'happening' makes a lot of sense. I may have to re-evaluate my opinion of him... Hmm...

you ve got to admit he was a handsome devil in his prime
well built, he looked like he could hold his own in a barroom brall.
His bull like appearance, his dark, smouldering looks, Im sure
he turned the ladies on.....(not to mention some of the men )

He could play the thug Bill Sykes, and yet with his refined English accent he could also play the aristocrat or business executive.

In many ways he had it all, but a wild, anarchistic streak in him made him achieve a lot less than he could have.

What I thought was interesting was that although he did have celebrity friendships with the likes of Keith Moon etc. he preferred to have more down to earth sessions with home brew and the village locals. I think one of his longest friendships was with the guy that used to do the garden at Broome Hall

Good point!

Yes, I think many film stars were/are like that, unfortunately though the press have always thought that MOST of the friends of these stars arent interesting or extroverted enough to film or photograph. But then maybe thats the way that both parties would prefer it? Just because you are portryed in the press with people doesnt mean they are your `FRIENDS`either.

I agree, there were no famous faces at his wedding at all, apart from his brother Simon who was a sports presenter at the time.

I read that his Grandfather founded Rada
and that his uncle was Carol Reed
so there are two big family connections with showbiz

Watched Tommy Lee Jones in his Mexico movie last night. I suddenly twigged who he'd always reminded me of.

Although Carol Reed eventually employed him in Oliver he didn't initially help him get into the business. OR was determined to make it himself.

Excellent movie as well, didn't realise that it was directed by him.

Question

Hi Folks,

I run an Oliver Reed fansite - oliverreed.net - which includes a section called Encounters, where fans lucky enough to have met the great man himself have posted in and shared their memories.

If those of you who met Ollie would further like to share your memories with other Ollie fans then why not pop by and post a message? It would be great to hear from you!
