One article in that excellent website, 'Big, extravagant and drinks like a fish.. (and that's only the car)' reminds me. For those of you interested in stars and their cars, Ollie's Panther Deville, which he sold in the early 1980's, is featured in this months Classic and Sportscar. Like OR himself it is an example of 1970's excess!!

How could i not make an appearance in this thread loved his films i think the shuttered room was the first one which got me interested in his on screen persona, tried to emulate him in younger years lol still am and i'll probably go the same way (without the sailors) the book evil spirits showed a nastier side that tarnished a few things for me, but i would have loved a drink and a chat, i love the story ozzy tells about him but that would be telling old fruity

Just to clarify - its the April 2008 edition which features Ollie's Panther De Ville.

It was custom made with a cooler box () in the boot and a gun rack () under the back seat.

It managed 12 miles to the gallon and cost Ollie £58,000 in 1980.

£58,000!!! Now that is what I call extravagant!

In his later years Reed decided to go for a 20k Nissan Z31 300ZXs as his final cars , of which he had two.(Frank Bruno and Ian Botham were also committed 300ZX owners)
Elton John also owned a Panther De Ville- his being the even more expensive only 11 built convertible

Interestingly considering it's cost (it was one of the most expensive cars you could buy then) it had door skins and mechanisms lifted from the lowly Austin Maxi!

The article does contain one error though - Ollie was done for drink driving. This from his 1979 autobiograpghy Reed All About Me:

When the new drink-drive laws came into force I suppose it was inevitable that sooner or later I would be asked to blow up a little plastic bag. The infinitesimal amount I was over the limit was not enough to get a newt slightly merry but they charged me Just the same. I took my case to the High Court, and I was banned for a year and fined £5. The law is the law and I am not wingeing, but 81 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood when you are allowed 80! Most people would agree that I was unlucky not to be let off with a caution instead of being prosecuted.

Ollie's resolution to stay in Britain frustrated his brother Dav id.
David watched as Ollie passed up a golden opportunity in Hollywood.
* You 've got to go to America Ollie " said David,
" Sean Connery has gone, so has Micheal Caine ! "
" Im not going, " replied Ollie, " Im a Brit and Im staying here . "
Within months of this conversation Ollie was offered two plum roles in Jaws and The Sting... Ollie turned down both roles and Robert Shaw got the part in Jaws..

Ollie was arguably the biggest star in Europe and he needed a step up to put himself into the world top 5.
In Ollie's eyes, moving to Hollywood would be like " tarting " himself around and he was nt prepared to do it .
