On the other hand, who wants to spend two hours watching close-ups of ugly people?
Who is really to blame for rubbish actors in films though? Surely it's the director, more than the actor. S/He chooses which scenes/takes to include. If an actor simply cannot cut the mustard, why is the director directing them? S/He should leave. Who's the whore here? You are the weakest link Goodbye

I'd rather watch the likes of Charles Laughton or Margaret Rutherford (no offence intended) acting than many of the talentless pretty boys/girls who have surfaced over the years. It's not a new phenomenon by any means .... think Tab Hunter, Troy Donahue et al in the 50s. Good looks and talent do go together sometimes, we have George Clooney and Jodie Foster as examples these days plus the likes of Paul Newman, Dirk Bogarde and Vivien Leigh previously. IMHO the fault lies with producers, agents and casting directors. It is very difficult, especially in the US, to get an agent these days unless you have that specific 'look' that is 'in' at that time. I believe this situation has come across the ocean from the US (where looks are more important than talent) and is now affecting programmes/films in the UK. For example shows like Hollyoaks, Footballers Wives and most of ITVs drama 'one-off' output are peopled by 'good looking' young things who couldn't act their way out of a bag of cheese and onion! I watched Lewis last night, not classic TV by any stretch but the leading roles were played by experienced actors with years in 'the biz'. Only Lawrence Fox was a youngster among that lot, he is a fine actor and has 'unconventional' looks. Mrs Bat (and Bilie Piper) think he is very sexy so it shows that the apparent obsession with 'pretty' people is something agents, casting directors and producers inflict upon us at their own whim.

At the age of 13, my daughter described one actor (I think it was Richard Armitage in bbc tv's 'North and South') as (she assumed a pronounced northern accent):
"Ah'm oogly, boot ah'm SEXY!" |
