Default Margaret Lockwood

A thread for Lockwood devotees to share the love, and discuss this iconic star of British cinema.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, Joan Greenwood and Margaret Lockwood - Silver Sirens is a great tribute to her (as well as Joan Greenwood). There's also a forum should anyone want to discuss her at more length!

So, favourite Maggie films?

Mine is without doubt The Wicked Lady, although The Man in Grey comes close. I also enjoyed The Lady Vanishes and Night Train to Munich. Any recommendations?

I have seen the two you mention, The Lady Vanishes and Night Train to Munich. She is famous for the Hitchcock film in the US, but I didn't realize she was a very big name in Britain for a long time.

I still have not seen The Wicked Lady. It must have been a great popular success, because I see many references to it in books and here on the forum.

Yeah, I might be repeating what you already know but she was Britain's biggest (female) box-office star of the mid-late 40s.

Over here, The Wicked Lady's success was quite unprecedented - it's still the ninth most viewed film of all time at the cinema, about 8m tickets were sold, I think.

Sadly she seems to be forgotten amongst British audiences. I had no idea who she was myself until I saw the aforementioned film, and fell in love!

When you do see it make sure it's the UK print and not the US one.

Has the US one been issued on VHS/DVD? Is it ever shown on US TV? And is the only difference less of the heaving bosoms?

The bosom issue is the only difference AFAIK .... the US version was shown on UK TV many moons ago but that was the only time I have seen it. I am not aware of any release for this version. There used to be some stills from it in The Wicked Lady display at Blickling Hall, but they downsized the display and they have gone.

It's an excellent site in progress. I did notice in her theatre credits a play called The Others and the plot description bears some relation to the film of the same name - characters not realising they are dead. Coincidence ?

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

I noted that too. It may have been inspiration for the film!

A gracious and friendly lady. I was lucky to work as a VERY new 3rd Assistant Director on The White Unicorn.

This thread needs propping up. And bringing to Wicked Lady's attention!

Love Story is one of my fave ML films now.

Thank you, My Darling!

Well, I have to say, if it's a rainy Sunday afternoon, I can think of nothing better than curling up on the couch with an enormous pot of fresh tea, some naughty snack-like-thing and a double bill of The Wicked Lady and The Man in Grey. Delicious fun!

But I do adore Love Story - you even get Margaret Lockwood and Patricia Roc in a slap fight!
