What kind of info ?
Last time PW appeared 'publicly' was in the interview extras for the new release of THE PRISONER on DVD. As afr as I am aware he hasn't worked for a number of years now - I assume he is more or less retired... I've seen him just once on the autograph circuit - he was looking fit and well, I must say. I met PG in the late 1970's when my wife was working on a theatre tour of Dracula, in which he starred. He was very friendly and kind. Some months or a year or so later, I was having lunch in a cafe in London often used by actors rehearsing in the area when in he walked. I was surprised and delighted when he came to my table and said "Stephen, how are you? May I join you?". Not many stars would have been this friendly, let alone know who I was and remember my name. he gets a 5 star rating from me.

PG seems to be a somewhat enigmatic character .... I have heard some horrible things said about him over the years and the recent Alan Bates book doesn't do him any favours. Yet a lot of people who have met him say what a great guy he is. I suppose, as usual, the truth is somewhere between the two.

I think he delivers one of the best performances in a horror film ever, in NIGHT OF THE EAGLE. His reaction to everything that's happening is brilliant. He really makes that film in my view. |

Wyngarde gets some coverage in the recent J G Ballard autobiography Miracles of Life. Under his real name of Cyril Goldbert he was interned by the Japanese, along with Ballard, in Lunghau Camp, Shanghai. Ballard thought he was witty and sophisticated and a good friend in the camp. Cyril confided in Jim that his stage name would be "Lawrence Templeton".
Jim met Cyril again in St James Park when he was famous as Jason King but when Jim started to speak, Cyril cut him dead. IMDb gives Cyril's birthdate as 1933 but Ballard, born 1930, says he was 4 years older than him. D. |

His talent for camp theatricality could have been used effectively in his career if the arrest hadn't damaged his career, but last appearance was a very good one in the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes as Langdale Pike.
He does seem to be a bit of a fantasist in interviews I have seen. He used to explain his lack exposure by saying he was a major stage director in the states and that took up all his time. In the pre-internet days you could get away with that sort of statement.

Goes on all the time. Charles Bronson was over 60 when he did his first Death Wish but claiming early 50s. Mae West the famous one for it. Doesn't matter really as long as you can get away with it.

There is a fan page here for PW with some pics
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~waynedavidson/jkboudoirinfo.htm Funnily enough I remember, not long ago, looking down a dark dusty, gated off tunnel on the London Underground and seeing a ageworn poster on the wall, close to the gate for a London stage production he was in during the 1970's. PW's billing and picture was on it - cant remember which station and what production it was though. Last edited by jacobean; 12-03-2008 at 10:40 AM. |
