This pool's been open nearly 40 years, and, in all that time I only slipped up once, to my mind. I was engaged in a particularly tricky word puzzle and 40 people had broken in and were in the pool, playing around, ducking, bombing and doing all manner of prohibited activities, and eventually someone was killed. ... I've been working here for 18 years, and in 1975 no one died. In 1976, no one died. In 1977, no one died. In 1978, no one died. In 1979, no-one died. In 1980... someone died. In 1981, no one died. In 1982 there was the incident with the pigeon. In 1983, no one died. In 1984, no one died. In 1985, no one died. In 1986... I mean, I could go on.

Genius!!!

Still comedy gold though.
No, I don't think he suffers from any of those things. There's only one thing wrong with him, he thinks that he's important. It's a problem shared with a lot of people of TV

A wonderful character though. When he first did The Alan Partridge Show (or whatever it was called) on the radio I did wonder if they were real interviews - for a while.

Well Jackdaw's post started off by naming Partridge so I presumed that's who was being talked about. And that's certainly who I meant, Partridge the character

Caught a festival screening of Hamlet 2 with Coogan and although it does drag on a bit, it is very, very funny. Coogan plays a failed actor who has taken refuge as a high school drama coach and is staging his own script for Hamlet 2. The opening montage of career acting highlights is a scream.

I see that Steve Coogan has announced dates for his live on stage UK tour commencing in the Autumn.

Has anyone caught his live act before? What is it like?

Dave.

He is very talented and has a troubled persona which reminds me of Peter Sellers. He has been in some rubbish and I think finds it difficult to shake off the Alan Partridge image

I was privileged enough to work with Steve Coogan on a few occasions, and compared to other comedians he was extremely professional, by which I mean he was concentrated, listened intelligently to requests, arrived on time, and was word-perfect. I've also always found him hilarious. I think his genius lies in mimickry, even with a made-up character like Partridge. Partridge is made up of lots of little bits of recognizable people and traits (John Motson and Jeremy Clarkson are both in there for example).

Coogan was an early guest on 'The Mrs Merton Show', and he was one of the few people who made Caroline Aherne laugh so much that she came out of character and couldn't carry on with the interview for a while. He came on as a guest immediately after Britain's tallest man, and Caroline asked him if he could impersonate someone that tall. He said he would have a go, and then went, 'I'm taaaallll'. OK, it loses something in the typing, but it was very funny at the time!

Anything Coogan does is worth a look. At his best he is a comic genius, at his worst he is still better than most of them. 'nuff said. :)

I believe he first started off life as an impressionist in Spitting Image. David Coleman's excitable verbal inflexions during the course of an athletics event were aped to perfection.
Like Mr. Crook, I am also a fan of Tommy Saxondale , the Pest Control man-or Rat Catcher as Raymond would describe him.
I think Coogan is a talented individual. The character Gareth Cheeseman always had me in stitches.

Wink coogan!!!

I like the man's work but a mate who was an extra on 24 hour etc siad he was a right c**t. He has said since that he had a cocaine prob at the time and perhaps that accounts for a lot.

I am a manc myself, the probelm with our city is that too much respect is given to the wrong types in this city. No doubt for a while Coogan thought he was a big name hanging around with the cities tough's in our trendy night clubs-full of posers mainly!

BUT Coogans Run, Knowing me etc and season 1 of I'm Alan Partridge are some of TV comedies finest hours. A talented comic-quite excellent.

Brill comic!!!!

I've always found all his comedy characters highly amusing. I think he's having/had a problem trying to break into big screen films. 'A Cock And Bull Story' was awful. And 'Around The World In 80 Days' was a huge flop.

.I think I prefer Rob Brydon nowadays to Coogan. Liked Partridge but the Pauline Calf thing not to my taste.

Same here I'm afraid. I find both Coogan and Gervais about as funny as leprosy.
