Default Steve Coogan

Like his mate Ricky Gervais, Steve Coogan has that type of personality that people either love or hate.
I thought he was good in the Alan Partridge series and '24 Hour Party People' movie but overall he has appeared in some rubbish too.

How do you rate him - genius or bore?

Dave.

I thought a Cock and Bull Story nailed what seems to be his real-life persona (which does seem to be not completely divorced from Alan Partridge) perfectly.

Close to genius.
I never liked the Paul/Pauline Calf characters. Although they weren't meant to be very likable.
But Alan Partrige is definitely close to genius level.
I really like the Saxondale character as well because I know a few old hippies and old rockers like that, living on their past glories - and Saxondale seemed to be dealing with it better than many

I distinctly recall Peter Hook (of New Order / Ex-Mr Merton!) calling Steve Coogan role as the late Tony Wilson in 24 Hour Party People: “The biggest **** in Manchester playing the second biggest **** in Manchester ”.

It might have been the other way round - but I was too busy rolling around on the floor to remember!

Apparently, in common with a lot of other artistes, he's not good at taking criticism,
Quote:
Phil Daoust: Former comedy critic
In 1998, a few months after I gave Steve Coogan's live show, The Man Who Thinks He's It, a lukewarm review, a friend ran up to me waving the comedian's brand-new video, in which a recording of the show was topped and tailed with fake behind-the-scenes footage.

"You've got to see this!" my friend said.

There Coogan was in his dressing room, in gown and hairnet, spitting on a copy of the Guardian, effing and blinding about me and my review. "'Doesn't take risks!' 'Doesn't take risks!' he fumed. "What's ... What's taking a risk? Is skulking in the shadows of a theatre making snide remarks about someone who makes 3,000 people laugh every fucking night, is that taking a risk? I'll tell you what taking a risk would be - for Philippe Daoust to meet me down a dark alley. I'd shove his three stars up his arse."

He'd obviously done his research. My byline has always been Phil Daoust, and only a few people know my full first name. "I've made this," Coogan went on, brandishing an evil-looking contraption. "It's a toilet chain stuck into a ball of Plasticine with fish hooks on it. I can use that as a weapon against him if I meet him. I'd swing it into his face and the fish hooks would stick, would stick in his cheek - like that! It doesn't hurt going in. It's when it comes out - it pulls a big chunk of flesh out of your cheek."

I was delighted, of course, as most critics are whenever we get a reaction. I still have the video, though the tape's wearing a little thin now.

I don't think a lot of comedians can take criticism.

I thought some of Coogan's Run was excellent, Knowing Me knowing You was toe-curling brilliance, the Tony Wilson impersonation in 24hr Party People was inspired, and even the Parole Officer was fun family entertainment. He seems an okay guy, a typical Mancunian, but his biggest problem will be shaking off the spectre of Partridge.

My problem with the Parole Officer (which may be petty) was the stupid Americanised title. Why couldn't he be a probation officer? Grump, grump.

He's not funny. Although he is very knowledgeable about Aston martins, I believe.

I'm Alan Partridge is one of my favourite comedies of all time. Absolute genius.

Never much been into his other stuff, though. I liked Saxondale, although it wasn't laugh-out-loud hilarious or especially ingenious. His other characters I can take or leave - apart from that fantastic security guard on The Day Today:

This pool's been open nearly 40 years, and, in all that time I only slipped up once, to my mind. I was engaged in a particularly tricky word puzzle and 40 people had broken in and were in the pool, playing around, ducking, bombing and doing all manner of prohibited activities, and eventually someone was killed. ... I've been working here for 18 years, and in 1975 no one died. In 1976, no one died. In 1977, no one died. In 1978, no one died. In 1979, no-one died. In 1980... someone died. In 1981, no one died. In 1982 there was the incident with the pigeon. In 1983, no one died. In 1984, no one died. In 1985, no one died. In 1986... I mean, I could go on.

Alan Partridge is a must for those who enjoy the comedy of toe-curling embarrassment, although truth be told, we're laughing at a man who suffers from a number of diagnosable disorders such as autism, Asperger's..................., Batman, please help with my theory!

Still comedy gold though.
