Default Googie Withers

Hi everyone, today is the 91st Birthday of Googie Withers, who I know is a favourite here at Britmovie, Googie has given us stirling performances in everything she has done, particularly 'It always Rains on Sunday', and the 70's TV Drama series 'Within these Walls' as Prison Govenor Faye Boswell which I remember fondly, does anyone else have any favourite 'Googie' Movies?

Cheers Googie, have a Great Birthday!

From the mid to late 1940s she was on a roll. One of our best actresses and quite outspoken, especially about Hitchcock and Francis L. Sullivan.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

Well I must mention her roles in Michael Powell films. She was in a few, especially some of Powell's early films.

The Girl in the Crowd (1935)
Googie was an extra until the 2nd female lead quit when Googie was plucked from the crowd and thrust in front of the camera. These films were being made quickly and cheaply so there would have been no time to go hunting around for a replacement 2nd lead. You had to make do with what was available. Sadly it "Missing, Believed Lost" so we don't know how well she did.

The Love Test (1935)
Again a 2nd female lead. Here she's the gum-chewing, wise-cracking secretary. Among her jobs is to teach the male lead how to kiss!

Crown v. Stevens (1936)
Googie is the friend of the female lead. They were both dancers and married rich men. But whereas Googie's man spends all his money on her, the friend isn't so fortunate

Her Last Affaire (1936)
Googie is a maid /waitress type at the hotel where some shenanigans take place. She is interviewed by the police along with John Laurie who plays a male servant of some sort at the same hotel. (It's a while since I've seen it)

One of Our Aircraft Is Missing (1942)
By the time Googie worked for Powell again in this one, she was a lot more famous and had done lots of glamorous roles. But for this one she dropped the glamour and the obvious make-up and appeared in dungarees and a headscarf. She glammed up a bit later on in the film though. Googie is just one of the various people the downed bomber crew meet on their journey through The Netherlands, but an important one. A great role.

The Silver Fleet (1943)
Back to the full glamour, playing the wife of the hero (Ralph Richardson), struggling with his apparent collaboration.

Default Happy Birthday Googie

Huge thanks to Mark O for flagging up the wonderful Googie's birthday.

Can I add a TV appearance to the list - Time after Time (1986 TVM) in which her character is blind, yet Googie still manages to convey extraordinarily powerful and varied emotions without being able to use her eyes.

I haven't seen this since 1986 but have never forgotten it.

The last time I saw her on stage - On Golden Pond, with husband John McCallum, was pretty memorable too. Why isn't she a Dame?

She was made a CBE in 2001, so that's probably as far as it goes.

Gwen Ffrangcon Davies became a Dame when she was a 100, so don't rule Googie out all together!

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

No, I thought it was, but I must have missed it. I'll add it so that we get a reminder in future

They both appeared in a production of Lady Windermere's Fan at the Haymarket in 2002, though it must be said that Googie didn't entirely convince as the mother of an 18 year old!
