Default Actor but not actress

Has the word gone out of fashion. In the last few years when an actress has been interviewed she has been constantly referred to as an actor and she has used the word actor to describe herself. Can somebody tell me why?
thankyou

It's considered sexist. They work as hard as actors so should be put on an equal footing etc.

Political correctness might be an alternative answer.

I still use the term actress - but in a derogatory for someone who spends more time at premieres and parties than doing the job of acting.

Let's start an alternative party/association and call it A.O.P.C. The Abolition of Political Correctness. We don't need to use derogatory terms anymore, BUT we can call a man who is in the chair of a meeting/committee, a 'CHAIRMAN' . Likewise for a woman IN THE CHAIR.

A chair is something you sit in - not a person! I will never use the term 'chair' to address a chairman/chairwoman or any of the other looney PC derivitives! We can weed out the obvious insults to minority groups, etc.

My wife works for the local county council and these ludicrous people swarm all over the whole network of public services!

Someone should make a Brit Film about it!!!

Good morning boys.

On our website, Northern Stars, which is devoted to Canadian actors, we only use the term actors based on a statement from Whoopi Goldberg who once said, "As an actress I can only play women, but as an actor I can play anything." When I first read that line I thought of Linda Hunt who played the male character Billy Kwan in the 1982 film The Year of Living Dangerously. I think she won the Academy Award for her work as a man.

I don't think it has anything to do with Political Correctness, or sexism. It's simply a job description. A pilot is a pilot. A Prime Minister is a Prime Minister. A chef is a chef. And, an actor is an actor.

Nonsense really. Saying "As an actress I can only play women" is a notion kicked into touch in the 1930s in Viktor und Viktoria. (remade with Jessie Matthews and later Julie Andrews).

The idea that Hollywood will cast Whoopi in a role because she's called an actor not an actress is pure fantasy. Her stock is low so she could call herself Jerry Bruckheimer's best friend and still struggle to get into anything.

The word Actress seems to be just a sad reminder of the days when the female Thespian used to be glamorous, refined and alluring. Nowadays, when scripts require that they use the F word at least six times in every sentence and kick at least three male characters in the crotch before the final titles roll this feminine term for their activities seems very unsuitable!

Should we call Queen Elizabeth King Elizabeth? Or the Monarch Elizabeth? What about Air Stewardesses? Are people these days ashamed of their gender? Some people have too much time on their hands.

Rock on Tommy! That'll do for me cocker!
You are right again Albabson! thumbs_u They diminish themselves and those they are 'acting' with. I can only think of a few films where foul language was apt, one being 'The Shawshank Redemption', on the other night. There are others I'm sure, but I usually avoid them, unless they are of the quality of T.S.R. wink

Good morning boys.

Thank you for all your postings on this one, I have enjoyed them all. Reading Whoopi's statement I can only presume she was on her umpteenth interview and was looking for something to say. For me she denigrated all the great actresses of her day and days gone by, I wonder what Lauren Bacall would have said if she had been sitting at the same interview.
Didn't Alistair Sim say after playing Miss Friton in the St. Trinians films " As an actor I can only play men but as an actress I can play anything"? wink
regards
