![]() Sir Henry Irving, the first actor to be knighted (1895) The Knighting of Actors “Birthday honors” fall as thickly as ever in England, though the day of their bestowal is no longer the anniversary of the sovereign’s birth. June 24 was chosen as a suitable day for general rejoicing in England, because King Edward was born in November, when the fogs are at their worst, and rejoicing of any sort is next to impossible. The custom of bestowing a knighthood on actors is now established. Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Sir Charles Wyndham and Sir John Hare will inevitably in the lists before long by George Alexander, Cyril Maude, Lewis Waller and Arthur Bourchier. A knighthood for Harry Lauder, we fear, is out of the question. He is a Scot. But he may console himself with the reflection that it was equally out of the question for Garrick, Kemble, Kean and Macready. They were good actors too, but Tree is a good actor, frequently, and a fairly versatile one, a man of the world, and a good fellow with a saving sense of humor. The custom of knighting the actors, which was begun with Irving, is not to be frowned upon, but knighthood counts for little in England nowadays, and the actors who have been knighted discard the empty honor in their professional work. So our actors need not envy, though they have no small titles to look forward to. With the dramatists the case is different. Sir Arthur Wing Pinero will hereafter be Sir Arthur even on the playbills. He is the second English playwright to catch a knighthood, the author of “Pinafore” and “Patience” being the first, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was made a knight because he so bravely supported the Government with his facile pen during the Boer war. Sheridan died plain “Mr.,” but so did Congreve, while Shakespeare and Ben Johnson were plain Will and Ben. This may console Mr. Clyde Fitch and Mr. Augustus Thomas, especially when they consider their enormous royalties, which, in the case of Mr. Fitch, have made him the only rival of Mr. Carnegie as a victim of seekers for pecuniary aid. Excerpt from The New York Times, 26 June 1909 Cyril Maude, Lewis Waller and Arthur Bourchier were not knighted. George Alexander was knighted in 1911, and Harry Lauder was knighted in 1919

Stanley Baker was never knighted - he accepted one but did not live long enough to receive the honour and therefore it is apocryphal. Many reference books make the mistake of 'knighting' him but it never happened and the title was not granted posthumously. His widow was granted the right to call herself Lady Baker however.

I later discovered that her father-in-law was Sir Bernard Miles. Many more meetings followed for various reasons and they always went on for longer than they were supposed to - starting with education and ending up with stage, film and television. Happy Days! |

So who is the poshest-ever Equity member? Timothy Bentinck is an Earl which I assume trumps Christopher Guest's baronage. Have there ever been any acting Dukes or Marquesses?

Jeremy Child is a baronet too though that's below an Earl, I think. I know both Bentinck and Guest had brief periods in the House of Lords (or could have done if they'd wanted).

This appears to be a point of some debate and I have contacted the relevant authorities to find out.

According to the DNB he was knighted in hospital near Malagar a few weeks before his death (was Her Maj snatching a crafty weekend in Torremolinos?)
