Mrs Bat says she has seen the Mature/Scott quote attributed to Gary Cooper as well!

You might be right Bats but over (too many!) years I have read this quote and it was always given to Victor.

'You should be kind to us normals, there are not many of us left you know'!

A very similar story was printed last year about Victoria Beckham in a shop in L A. She was supposed to have said 'don't you know who I am? and the assistant said 'no'.

When it comes to the point when you say `Dont you know who I am`? I`m guessing it`s a slippery slope to becoming a sad, down and out person.

The story I hear was that a celebrity was sitting in First Class and demanded that the stewardess speak to some other passengers and request that they be quite while the celeb got some sleep. The Stewardess said no Sir I cannot do that, the celeb said Do you know who I am ?? The stewardess said no sir, your name is???
It was Brad Pitt do not know if it was true and old Brad seems a decent chap but a corking story

I find some of this stuff apocraphyl. Most stars also supposedly spend most of their time trying not to be recognised so they can avoid being poked, prodded and photographed by oiks like me...........

Maybe if you've paid an awful lot of money for foist clarse and the service is crap, you are entitled to be pissed off.......... I would be myself, but then I'm too squeaky to pay the money.........

I think in the past a lot of stars tried not to be recognised, but I think today most `stars` go out of thier way to be recognised as there is a lot of competition now in the industry and the more you are seen and fussed over the better, its all about out doing other people now to be the richest and the most popular, or just getting plain attention(whether they get that through good or bad publicity!)

But, I do agree that `proffessional and talented` people still prefer thier privacy. Its the people who are insecure because of thier lack of talent and self esteem that need to be adored or at least recognised by the public.

I have always admired people who just get on with thier career and have no need to be adored. They tend to be extremely good at thier job.

To be fair to showbiz folk there are always people at a certain level in any profession who develop a certain arrogance and a sense of entitlement and most people will have come across them from time to time.

A friend of mine once waitered at a London restaurant and Tony Curtis was eating there one evening. He was told the meal was on the house. The next day he ate there again and when presented with the bill this time was upset, embarassed and uncomprehending.

A German writer once played a practicle joke on a number of celebs back in the 80s when he purported to be an elderly lady plutocrat and wrote to a large number of wealthy celebs asking that they might be the beneficiary of 'her' estate. A number of very high profile people answered agreeing and even handing over some very personal details (private numbers and addresses etc). Apart from a few honourable exceptions - Alec Guinness and I think Sean Connery, who wanted the money to go to charity - they all speedily agreed to the inheritance. When the cover was blown in the form of a book there were a lot of embarassed and angry celebs shouting through their lawyers trying to get the book stopped

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

Richard Harris tells a story about meeting Bruce Willis.Richard was with his wife the ( allegedly) gorgeous Ann Turkel.Bruce turned his back on Richard to talk to Ann, peeving Mr Harris somewhat.Richard politely introduced himself but was ignored. He tried again.Ignored.He was beginning to lose patience so he said
" My name is Richard Harris and the lady you are talking to is my wife" Willis continued to ignore him.Losing his temper Harris grabbed Bruce spun him around and bellowed
" my name is Richard Harris. The reason I keep introducing myself to you is that I don't know who the f*** you are".

I heard a story about a celeb who said the 'Do you know who I am?' line. The person they were addressing, said out loud to no-one in particular, 'Can anyone help? This gentleman does not know who he is'

That line is used in 24 Hour Party People, where Tony Wilson asks a train conductor the same question and gets the same reply. Although in this case, the conductor was a fan of Tony's and was just joking. Of course, they freely admit in the film that a lot of what they portray never actually happened!

The great musical film with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland 'For me and my Girl' covers it nicely when Kelly says 'I demand to be number one' and Garland replies 'you can't get lower than number one'!

That was supposed to Peter Cook who replied and went into a whole routine about "he doesn't know who he is."
