Default Odd Stanley Baker Film

While googling I came across a Stanley Baker film that I had never of called Popsy Pop (1971). It has several alternative titles ...

Queen of Diamonds
The 21 Carat Snatch
The Butterfly Affair
The Great Diamond Chase

... has anyone seen this film?

Thanks.

It was one of the foreign language films that Baker made when his career declined. I suspect it was never released widely over here.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

An Italian/Venezuelan co production, direected by Jean Herman. Herman had previously directed the brilliant Farewell Friend with Charles Bronson and Alain Delon.

Screened quite a few times by the Horror Channel (although not a horror film) a few years back under the title The Butterfly Affair. Very much a product of its time, a tough and gritty tale of diamond smuggling, betrayal and lust. Claudia Cardinale and Henri Charriere co star alongside Baker.

The Butterfly Affair title was most likely to capitalise on the participation of the real life Papillon in the film.

It really is only one for die hard Baker fans, or lovers of obscure continental cinema.

The print screened on tv was public domain quality, and looked cut by quite a bit.

I see they've also got Sir Stanley in La Ragazza con la Pistola (Girl with a Pistol) on amazon.de, but it appears to be only in Italian, and is quite expensive.

If she's waving a gun about she's probably in one of her moods.

I have seen/got Popsy Pop and I have to agree you have to be a die hard Baker fan to get it! ;-) Being of such, Stan the Man makes the best of a truely awful film, imo.

I once met Sir Stanley's former business partner, the film producer Michael Deeley, and spoke with him for a while about SB. Even he mentioned (with no prompting from me - I never even mentioned the film!) how poor Popsy Pop was.

Should be worth a look to see how SB coped with it all.
