I'd say that Caine has made the most of his abilities, and his accusation that many of his (sloshed) peers didn't has some validity. If you draw up a list of the best British films; Caine will be amongst the most prominent actors.

He's fantastic in quirky character roles like Gattaca
and Talented Mr Ripley but not so good as a conventional lead. Still a fine actor though and pretty good on stage.

He was lucky in that films that a number of his films have 'lasted' in the public memory (not just film buffs) and survived down the generations. You don't need many films to survive like that and Caine has had enough of them unlike some of his peers. Not many of his films were all out blockbusters but many have survived none the less. The whirligig of time have been kind to him.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

He was pretty good as Faustus but I wouldn't call him great.

He was hot in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore. I'm looking forward to comparing his Hamlet with David Tennant's.

Jude was angelically good-looking. Who needs to act? People just wanted to look at him. I thought he was very good as that robot in that strange AI fillum. He was very, very good in Ripley and interesting in that Russian one where he was a sniper.

Michael Caine is a professional actor. You offer him money and he acts. Sometimes his character works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the scripts are good, sometimes they're not. I suspect it's all the same to him.

Ewan should never have done that Star Wars gig, but hey! That's showbiz! I liked his singing voice in Moulin Rouge......... it was his voice, I hope.

I think fantastic is going a bit far. He can be OK in the right role but he's nothing special.

I agree about Ewan Mcgregor and James Nesbit.

I think (sorry I dont know his real name......well, not really sorry) Captain Jack off Torchwood is very over rated and a bit wooden to be honest.

Jimmy Nail `cos he can`t act.

Clint Eastwood is very over rated and a bit annoying too!

Cameron Diaz (sp?).

Richard Gere. Nuf said!

I could imagine Harris in Zulu, Burton in Get Carter, one of the others having a stab at Ipcress, Italian Job or Alfie, but none of them doing the broad spectrum. It should be added that many have been remade and yet failed dismally (Jude Law twice)

I think most American actors are over rated actually, Brad Pitt especially as I have mentioned many times before.

Dennis Waterman is someone where I could never see any talent.

Billie Piper is also someone who is over rated as I think she just hit lucky with Dr Who.

Billie's good. I was surprised how good she was in Who and she's been fine in everything else she's done. I liked her in the Pullman tv plays.

Yes but when has he failed in a TV series - not in my living memory. He is up there with John Nettles and David Jason as one of the titans of popular TV. All you need is a mainstream TV programme with DW doing the theme and you can't fail

Brad Pitt; very good indeed in 7even, can't speak for his other roles...

Dennis Waterman, excellent in The Sweeney, his success in Minder has taken him away from drama into comedy, which, although he is successful, isn't actually his forte IMHO...

Billie Piper; not just a pretty face; I'm not saying she's the next Helen Mirren, but she's still very young; give her a chance...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??
