Either one of your suggestions might be the elusive chap, for all I know, so my point was not about YOU but rather the possibility that you may be indeed correct and it WAS Bill Hicks that the press referred to as "America's Bernard Manning".
If that is the case then I'm flabbergasted.
Thus...my Spelt Flake Evacuation is due to the Press rather than anything you didn't say.

Anyway..........

I actually like (in small quantities) Bernard Manning.

Sam Kinison, on the other hand, is not my cup of Horliks and I'd recommend you remain in your blissful state of never having encountered him.
Check him out on YouTube if you must, but be warned....it's pretty grim stuff!

Regards
"Fred"

Er ... you did! I wasn't suggesting anyone ... I merely provided a photographic memory jogger.

I like Hicks and Mason but this Kinison chap I will pass on. I don't like the look of him.

My goodness, something else we have in common! Are you sure you're not my long lost brother?

Jackie Mason's not dead, Lenny Bruce died decades ago....the only other dead US comic I remember that was around in the 80's that pushed the envelope was Andy Kaufman, and he didn't do much stand-up over here...Sam who?? Could be...

The only other charmer that fits the description (apart from the fact that he's still alive) is Andrew Dice Clay.

My qwerty feels sullied at the mere typing of his name.

The hot money is on Kinison.

What say you davidb ?

Apologies Davidb ,I was concentrating on the material not the date
The 80's was way too late for Carroll o' connor.
My vote goes for bill hicks too ,he fits the Bill
