Post English Hercules

Anyone remember "Reg Park"?

He was the bodybuilder from Leeds ( also ex Leeds utd reserve team footballer),

who in the early sixties rivalled "Steve Reeves" in the many Italian "Spear &

sandal epics!

Reg Park sadly died in 2007. IMHO he was second only to SR as Hercules.

I recall Richard Egan telling a tale about auditioning for a part and saying he had read Shakespeare and studied acting etc, and the producer told him to take off his shirt! Egan got the part because of his fifty inch chest! It may have been for 'The 300 Spartans.'

Rory Calhoun made 'The Colossus of Rhodes' though he wasn't an obvious body builder!

Agreed. He was also a legend in the body building world, and Arnold Schwarzeneggar's boyhood idol.

Does anyone know of a good book on the subject off Hercules movies/Peplum? I've got a book on the posters of the genre, called Retro Stud, but that's about it.

One of my all favorite films starring Egan is UNDERWATER with Jane Russell who makes sure that the other attractive girl in the film stayed in the background!

I'm surprised anyone could see her behind two such enormous chests!

There's this one, but I don't know anything about it.

Amazon.co.uk: Italian Sword and Sandal Film: Burke: Books

And this one, which is an Italian book. I have no idea if there is an English edition.

Amazon.co.uk: Il cinema Peplum: La prima guida critica ai film di Conan, Ercole, Goliath, Maciste, Sansone, Spartaco, Thaur, Ursus (Futuro saggi): M. D Cammarota: Books

LB* I run the film quite regularly and the other girl (can't name - well can if I view the credits) wears trousers most of the time whilst Jane is in swim wear. A bit overweight
I would say, certainly by todays stick insect tastes

The other girl in 'Underwater' was Lori Nelson, a particular favourite of mine. I believe Jane Russell was upstaged at the premier of the film by Jayne Mansfield!
