Gervais and Dudley moore should not be mentioned in the same breath .
Dudley had a pedigree and served his time with Peter cook ,along with that his first and last love was music.
He was a musician and composer par excellence and his wish was to be remembered for his music , does gervais have a talent other than his "so called " comedy ?

WAS Dudley Moore that great ? his movies did nt pull up
that many trees and often fell flat.
Theres nothing worse than trying too hard to be funny on film.

The true funny mnen don t really have to try,
people like Eric Morecombe for eg, he just had it,
his personality, his offbeat delivery of lines
his acting in sketches, we just couldn t get enough of him.

Once Eric was gone it was all over.

Whats happened to the comedy duo ?
Looks like theres only Canon and Ball left on the scene and they
don t do much telly these days .

They played the church social club just around the corner from my house a few months ago.

I'll probably be castigated for being unfashionably PC.

But i have to say through all his work - from when i first saw him on some late night chat show (the 11 o'clock show??) through The Office (which i agree was brilliant), Extras and stand-ups - he's milked cheap laughs from disabilities to a greater extent than any other comedian.

I really don't see this as hallmark of a 'great' comedian.

To be a comedy actor, you have to be an actor. It takes more than appearing in front of a camera, spewing out pre-written lines and maybe act the fool. Comedy actors, you are looking at the likes of Peter Sellers,Ronnie Barker etc,who were not only funny, but had an acting range. Ricky Gervais is not only unfunny, the only character he can play is Ricky Gervais. He is the most over rated person in Britain, and the USA like him, they are welcome to him (and I like the Americans).

I couldn't agree more. Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise were and still are peerless. No comedy double act has matched them since.

M & W were on tv last night at 6,you can still catch on the internet. They were effortlessly funny.I had the good fortune to see them live in MMay 1977 at the Wembley Conference Centre. All the usual routines but it did nt matter they were very funny and i still fondly remember this show.Gervais is not fit to clean their boots.

Two points; you are doing M&W a disservice; they did a lot of strenuous rehearsal to seem that effortless. If you saw the doc last night you should recall that they never adlibbed in performance....if they came up with a better joke than the writer they would add it in...in rehearsal
M&W were comedians; they could act in sketches, but their other acting efforts - in the films for example - aren't very good. Gervais is more of a comic actor a la Hancock...except he writes too, which neither M&W or Hancock did to any extent...so you are not really comparing like with like.

I think the greatest comedy actors were Stan and Ollie. Every time I see one of their films I laugh constantly. Great slapstick, clever wordplay and smart characterisations. Pure magic!

Runners up medals to Alastair Sim, Will Hay, Gordon Harker and Bob Hope.

Bats.
Their silent shorts were just tremendous....right up there with Chaplin and Keaton....they were the Gods of comedy acting.
