She's not popular in our house .... Mrs Bat was up against her in the auditions for Lady Jane and, by all accounts, a bit of nepotism helped HBC get the part.

I've never understood HBC's appeal. Her best work IMHO was as the voice of Lady Tottington in Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit.

I think she's fab and consistently interesting, she walked away with Sweeney Todd IMO.

Mind you, I might not be so charitable if she had taken my job a la Mrs Bats.

In other news I once saw her in what is possibly the most banal sighting of a star to be recounted in these pages - she bought a pineapple from a greengrocers next to pub I was having a drink in. That is all.

Nepotism was a factor in her lead roles for Tim Burton, I think.....

I'm sure I read somewhere that Sondheim had casting approval on Sweeney Todd ... it could all be gammon of course.

She annoyed me in her 'English Rose' period, but it has to be said the older she has grown the more her acting talent has improved. And she has become a lot more fanciable. In SWEENEY TODD she practically oozes sex, albeit of a grimy and sordid nature.

"Whatever happened to Fay Wray?"

I agree. The older she gets the better her acting becomes. She obviously stole the show in Sweeney Todd.

But has anyone else noticed how, er, hairy she is? Gorgeous face, but all that body hair?

Pubes, boyo, pubes! She appeared to be inordinately well thatched, unless that was a stick-on - for modesty's sake. Actually, reading the earlier thread from Batman, how Mrs. Bats lost out on an audition to HBC, brought to mind Basil Fawlty's threat to the deaf woman at his hotel, "if you don't watch it I'll creep in here in the night and put a bat up your nightie!"
Could the thatch be Batman in disguise? Or could I finally be going mad with linear thoughts like that?
Ah well, I've nothing else to do while my price lists print, and neither have you if you were still up at 3.30am.
Regards,
HG

i.e. She looked like a normal human being.
Bizarrely masochistic, porn-movie-inspired fashions in waxing were not around in the early 1900s, when the film was set. I've read of actresses being told not to remove body hair if they're going to be doing nude scenes in historical films, because it's not accurate. The very idea makes me wince: I've never even shaved my legs.

"Trust me, I'm a doctor...!"
