She looked lovely, especially when she danced in front of the mirror and when she went down on her knees before Sabu. But any case of white actors "blacking up" like that is embarrassing to our modern sensibilities. She never said a word in the film so I'm sure that there would have been plenty of other people who could have played the part. But Powell always did like a pretty girl

I agree with all that you say both on Walbrook and Simmons. I thought she did a great job and showed what talent was waiting to be unleashed. As for Anton, he always gave fine performances in most of his film roles (except that dreadful film he did with Margarietta Scott can't recall its name).

Oliver Reed as Dolly Hopkins in Funny Bones - quite a camp character!

(Most of Ollie's part was cut during editing apparently)

7/9/1989 apparently. To be fair, once you've got over the yellowing up, it's no more racist than the Griffith version - its heart is in the right place though its budget is small.

I thought John Wayne laughable as a Roman soldier. Something to the effect, 'We have killed the Son of Gawd!' Even worse, Genghis Khan? You've got to be kidding. I think he once played a German submariner as well--not sure of that. When Mr. Wayne stuck with what he was good at--shooting bad guys and Indians--he couldn't be beaten. I am not sure how popular he is with our Arizona Indians, however.

The exact line was "Trooly he was the Sarn of Gard".

It is forever etched in my brain!

What a movie "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was!

The Conqueror was another classic. I don't think ANYONE was cast well in that, least of all John Wayne as Khan.

Not a British actor, but "nice guy" Jimmy Stewart always blows me away with that sweaty, obsessive performance in Hitchcock's "Vertigo."

I have to disagree about Jimmy Stewart's performance in Vertigo. He was certainty obsessive, but that's what the part called for. Also, I like the way Hitchcock did the settings in San Francisco. I am familar with Babylon by the Bay, having lived there. I also had a DeSoto very similar to the one Jimmy drove in the film. I also had a big thing for Kim Novak, and was glad she got the part rather than Vera Miles.

Jimmy's character being afraid of heights was perfect for San Francisco as the area has a lot of tall buildings to add to the effect.
