Default Denholm Elliott

I searched the forums and was not sure if anyone has talked about Denholm Elliott. I have enjoyed him in some films that were shot in the states. What other things has he done and how do you in Britian view him??

He's very much missed as a world class character player who could turn his hand to any kind of role. The last time I remember his name coming up here it was in connection with an advert he did for Volkswagen cars not long before he died in which he looked shockingly ill. This was the first that most of the general public knew of what was to be his fatal illness.

I think Lord Brett has hit the target with his comments. Mr Elliott's roles over a great many years covered such a wide spectrum.

I never got around to watching "Bangkok Hilton" until this year. He was truly admirable. If I watch it again it will be to see him

Top actor. His wife Susan wrote a very good biography of him in 1994, called Quest for Love. It's worth tracking down.

My favourite Denholm Elliott story was when when he was filming Robin and Marian in Spain.

Rather than stay in a hotel with the rest of the crew he sloped off to a nearby monastery where they brewed a noted local booze. He liked it so much he stayed in a cell there for the duration of the film!

Default one of the finest actors I have ever seen

Denholm Elliott was one of the finest actors I have ever seen – one my all-time favourite actors – with a wonderfully rich voice and powerful dramatic presence. He deserved to be knighted for his superb performances in wide variety of television, film and theatrical leading and supporting roles.

My three favourite Denholm Elliott performances were in television - where his magnificent, powerhouse acting performances in Bangkok Hilton (1989) as Hal Stanton, in Bleak House (1985) as John Jarndyce (I think the Denholm Elliott/Diana Rigg 1985 BBC version is superior to the 2005 BBC version), and in the Charles Dickens ghost story The Signalman (1976) as The Signalman, are unsurpassed in their brilliant virtuosity.

Denholm also showed his considerable talent for comedy as The Bishop in The Missionary (1982) and in Ripping Yarns (1977) as Mr Gregory in Across the Andes by Frog, both with Michael Palin.

Denholm Elliott as Hal Stanton in the superb Australian mini-series Bangkok Hilton

OK, I loved him in A Room With A View. The character was great and so was he. I think he also showed up in the Indiana Jones movies, especially the one with Sean Connery.

I always liked him in Nothing But The Best, an excellent and very underrated film. He was a great actor in virtually everything he did, cannot think of a lacklustre performance.

Superb actor ... peculiar private life.

I remember hearing his wife talk about it on the radio (he didn't keep anything secret from her). The way he died was very sad, but, well if you behave like that, it's almost inevitable.

He was wonderful in the small, but crucial role of Theresa Russell's husband in Nic Roeg's "Bad Timing."
