Former Golden Girls actress dies of dementia at age 84. A sad farewell to a well loved actress.

I think it's more correct to say that she died of natural causes although it was thought that she was suffering from Parkinson's disease and osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease. Doctors later discovered she actually had Lewy body dementia; both the Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diagnoses were incorrect.

But dementia, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's don't actually kill people so you can't die of them.

I remembered Estelle opposite Sylvester Stallone in Stop or My Mom will Shoot. She was great! She was also in Mannequin, but I havn't yet seen this one.

I loved her character Sophia .In the days when we only had 4 channels ,The golden girls was welcome viewing .
Looking back at her life and career , It seems she was a natural for the part she played ,and surprisingly was 14 months younger than Bea Arthur ,who was her stage daughter .
RIP Estelle

I May be getting older ,but I refuse to grow up

An excellent actress who was wonderful in the part of Sophia.
She was at first thought "too young" for the part in Golden Girls but it's amazing what a bit of make-up can produce.
Sophia's sarcastic jibes were the highlight of the show.
I'm sure she will live on forever in endless re-runs around the world.

Dave.

The Golden Girls was a rare treat--and the quality of shows on our broadcast network is geting rarer. The casting was inspired--much as Jerry Seinfeld, who didn't think he had to hog all the laughs. The last U.S. show with a good ensemble, I think, is Will & Grace.

We lost Jo Stafford, now Estelle. So, if the 'curse' proves true, who's next?

I very much enjoyed her on The Golden Girls - it's still in syndication here in the States. That show had some of the best one-liners in recent sitcoms.
