It is a lovely photo Fell, for me black and white portraiture is far better than colour, in her face you can see her warmth and intelligence.
Also as a little aside and definitely not to cause offence do you notice she has a slight weakness in her left eye?

I agree,Fell - a natural look takes a far better photo than a posed one.

Can you tell me what she's thought about her last 10 years in the biz, compared to her first years?

And, do you consider her career to have Early Years, Middle and these newest years? And which films delineate those segments? (I realize "stage work" may be a delineator as well...)

WALKABOUT is an easy choice for Early Works, but do you put LOGAN'S and AMERICAN WEREWOLF together in her Middle Works? Or might you argue that LOGAN'S was the end of her Early Period?

Some good questions there!

I would separate her early films in which she had the lead [ISC, TRC, Walkabout and The Snow Goose] from Logan's Run and AAWIL. I certainly don't feel the latter made the greatest use of her acting talents.

Hang on to those questions - I have PM'd you.

I think you can break it into three sections:

Her child star years culminating with Walkabout, The Railway Children and The Snow Goose which all appeared in 1971; her Hollywood career which took off with Logan's Run in 1976 and finished with Child's Play 2 in 1990; and her post-Hollywood career back in Britain.

Sounds reasonable. I wonder if this will correspond with her thoughts on the subject and, if not, what her delineators are.

I spent time with a favorite musician whose span of albums has always been segmented by me - Early, Middle, Pop, Jazz, Back To Roots, etc. But in her mind, she segments those works not by dates, but by some of the lyrics and subject matters, so Album 2, 8, 11, 14 (for example) are 'alike' in her mind, and the Date, Location, Instrumentation aren't factors when she ponders that segment's musical value to her.

To me, I segmented them because of musical stylings and instrumentation, not the lyrical topics. This may be logical for me and the Audience, but hers is the logic of the Writer.

It would be interesting if Agutter considers factors that I don't see or know about to 'segment' her career achievements.

She often refers to her Hollywood phase as her 'LA years' so physical displacement may affect how she thinks too. Walkabout seems to be some sort of watershed/turning point too because she considers it her first adult role. She had second thoughts about doing The Railway Children because she did not want to do any more child roles (although she seemed to do several after The Railway Children).

Interesting fact which I only learned recently: her two favourite films are Walkabout and American Werewolf - I am genuinely surprised The Railway Children is not in there.

She's at an age now where she might reprise a role or three, seeing what changes that character and world had endured. WEREWOLF could be an exploration of recovering traumas and confronting the village that apparently hid or protected the film's first werewolf (we know this from the radio-play).

And Walkabout, wow. I'd LOVE to see a re-visit of that world and those characters.

Yeah, but who could do it justice? I'm sure Roeg doesn't want to do a 're-visiting' of the characters. There's nobody but Lucien John and Jenny to re-visit, anyway, and it's pretty clear what happened to them (characters) in life.
Maybe the Nic Jr. boy becomes a tour guide to the Outback, and Jenny's character decides to write a novel about her adolescent adventure...
not much of a movie there.

I'm not so sure I'd divide Jenny's film career chronologicaly quite so rigidly. In my opinion, there were a number of films during the late 70s/early 80s that fitted in more comfortably with her early work than they did with the "Hollywood" films of the same period.

So am I.

However, we only see the finished product and although Jenny quite clearly enjoyed the filming, despite initial reservations, it must be somewhat wearing to have admirers talking to her about it time and time again.

I know she has another which she really enjoyed that has all but disappeared off the radar.

Hi, FELL,

I'm surprised too that Jenny doesn't include The Railway Children in her favs. There's a reference to her writing something about the Railway Children, although I believe that wasn't completed but I really wish it had been, so Jenny must have been very engrossed in the film at one time. Do you think her not having the chance to finish the writing makes her a bit off the film because not being able to complete the writing saddens her? I'm probably all wrong here, and you will know because of your research and having talked to her.

All the best,

Barbara

Default "Walkabout" on the big screen

I did a search for screenings of 'Walkabout' in the States. "Walkabout" will be shown at The Music Box Theatre, Chicago, on 22 Jan and 24 Jan. If you happen to be in that area, you have a great chance to see 'Walkabout' on the big screen and its glorious shots not only of Jenny but the wonderful Australian landscapes.

Lucky those who can attend.

All the best,

Barbara
