Default American accent

To answer my own question, I skimmed through Child's Play 2 today (horror - not my favorite genre either) and see that Jenny speaks with a neutral Midwest sounding American accent. Can anybody think of other roles she has played without her lovely English accent?

Too bad this had to be her last American film! I think this was also her last role filmed outside of Britain also - am I right?

In China 9, Liberty 37, Jenny's accent is not her normal one - I'd have to check it to give any better description.

In Beulah Land, her accent is more working class - almost Cockney.

She uses a German accent in Riddle of the Sands.

She also uses a variety of accents when doing audio books - always seems a bit odd to me when I hear her with a northern accent.

All her roles since have been UK films - but not always filmed just in the UK. According to IMDb, Irina Palm was also filmed in Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and France but I'm sure Jenny gave me a different list.

I though her accent in China 9 was a more subdued English accent then normal but not quite American. Its odd hearing her and the Italian-accented Fabio Testi but otherwise both looking the part.

Having on hand a cornucopia of recent arrivals from libraries across America I was able to pop these in and hear for myself.

The accent in Beulah Land sounds a bit posh for Cockney, to my ears anyway.

The German accent seems to go sometimes to an English one in Riddle of the Sands but mostly an intriguingly different voice for her then the usual.

Here's a very recent photo of Jenny that will be hard to find:

Stunning!

Seems a bit of a dangerous photo to use in the SAGA magazine - give too many of them heart attacks.

Indeed - on both counts!

I assume it is the SAGA magazine as I know Jenny gave them an interview in mid March and the description says it is a 2008 printing of a subscription only magazine although it doesn't appear in the online contents of the latest issue. Just as well my nextdoor neighbour gets it and I claimed it from her a month ago!

I nearly spilled my drink when Jenny said "Skedule" last week, three times as well.
Too many years over the pond obviously ;-)

Default Saga

Yes. A great picture.

What month is the issue? April 2008?
I see they have up to March 2008 content online.

The magazine slogan "Doing things properly" - gotta love it.

It's the May issue - came out earlier this week. I'm hoping to scan it in later today and then get the magazine when my neighbour has finished with it.

Default schedule z

A survey of my Canadian and Indian-based associates has them switched to "skedule" at work because of American interaction. This is a new thing that wasn't the case with those I worked with 10 years ago there. I suspect that outside of England the pronunciation is evolving towards "skedule".

I would guess this is a more recent adaption since Jenny held so firmly to her Englishness in LA to slip up so egregiously.

But how does she pronounce "Z"?
"zed" seems firmly in place thoughout the non-US, English-speaking world.
If she says "zee" then it calls for intervention by the authorities.

Otherwise she'll wind up like Hugh Laurie, very convincingly doing American shows (House M.D.).

Saga is great though rather depressing for oldies who don't spend all their time skydiving and bungee-jumping. Celebs often reveal stuff they wouldn't tell Hello!, presumably on the assumption that nobody is going to notice - for example it was Saga who outed Terence Stamp on his secret love for pre-war girls school stories.

(and no, I'm not a subscriber myself...)

If every issue had photos like these, it would be worth subscribing:

Off now for a while so I'll leave you with these for a few days.

Just hope no-one changes my recording setup so I miss The Invisibles.
