I think we all know that Will Hay died in 1949, aged about 60, I think. He is buried in Streatham Cemetery, South London in an area called "Artists Corner"
I recently visited the grave and just behind is a monument to hundreds of music hall stars buried in the same area. I spent a while reading the names but I did not recognise any at all. It has fired up an interest in me to find out more about the music hall in the first half of the twentieth century. It is quite well documented in books etc. but does any one know of a web site dedicated to this subject?
Help please.

If you have SKY, Matinee Movies (336) is frequently showing A LITTLE OF WHAT YOU FANCY at the moment ; it's a filmed tribute to the halls and features a number of the artists with some of their routines reproduced.

As you are London based, there is IIRC an old Wiltons Music Hall still standing in the East End.

I got the boxed set of DVDs of his Gainsborough films last Christmas. I haven't watched them all yet but the familiar ones like Oh Mr Porter and Ask A Policeman I've watched over and over.

Roy Hudd is a bit of a music hall historical supremo so check out his website.

My grandfather was a music hall ventriloquist post The Great War (WW1) but I've not tracked down his stage name or gigs. All I've got is his photograph done by a professional studio in about 1919, and as far as I know he wasn't famous.

In those days many working class people would try their luck in the music hall for extra cash doing their party pieces, some went on to great things others went home to (in his case) a wife and about 9 kids with a few extra bob, then up again at six am to start his day job. Unfortunately he died young from pneumonia .

Sam's right Bob M, Roy's your boy if you want the gen on music hall. Like Sam, I watch Will Hay over and over again and never tire of him. When I say over and over again, I don't mean continuously - well, you know what I mean!!!

Watched Boris Karloff last night in Island of Death or some such title. Very atmospheric and eerily lit. Old Boris was definitely 'the right man for the job' in horror films!

I listened to the radio documentary The Parade's Gone By about a young Kevin Brownlow when he interviewed many silent stars and directors back in the 1960s for his excellent book. He kept all the interview tapes and they were the main feature of this radio programme

One man he interviewed back then was Boris Karloff and I felt terrified listening to his real voice! I bet in real life he was a very nice chap but his voice was so eerie!

This bunch offer a good selection of CDs featuring restored recordings of many music hall and early variety artists including the great Mr Hay himself (on Murder & Mayhem (Var12)):

Windyridge CDs

You can also listen to some songs, and there are some short articles on music hall and music hall songs.
