He did a few appearances in some early Michael Powell films like Something Always Happens (1934), Lazybones, The Night of the Party and The Phantom Light (all 1935). Then he worked for Powell again in The Battle of the River Plate (1956) as Capt. Woodhouse of HMS Ajax and in The Queen's Guards (1961) as the grumpy old father of the bride.

He actually did fractionally more films in the UK. But many of them were very minor works when he was young (and even better looking). Only a few of those have survived the passage of time.

Thanks, Steve. I don't think I've ever seen him in a British film, but I'll keep my eye out for the ones you've mentioned.

Whilst Mr. McGoohan was still (probably) a shy young 20 year-old working behind the scenes (he wasn't even mentioned as an Assistant Stage Manager at that point) Mr. Macnee was a recognised actor, pushing 30, from The Smoke. It is curious to wonder if they came into contact, (Hey lad! Get me a cup of tea, there's a love!) or if Mr. McGoohan watched the experienced thespian from the wings and wondered if maybe he could do that........ He was to join the thespians on stage in May of that year.

Hello, Moor,

I have long followed the career of Patrick McGoohan. A fine, highly intelligent and versatile actor/director/writer with a unique presence and voice on sdreen. There is no one quite like him, and if you close your eyes and just listen, you can tell immediately that it's McGoohan. From Drake to GB Shaw, he was excellent in every role he played.

I've had a wonderful time browsing your various sites in tribute to him. Well done! You have some old photos and information on his theatre career that I've never seen or read, including the interesting interviews. Sites are a labour of love, so congrats on all the time you obviously have spent. McGoohan's artistic work is worth it.

All the best,

Barbara

Also a bit of a hobby..........

His John Drake was a hero of mine. When I got on-line a few years ago he was one of the things I started looking up. Looking at Matt's Danger Man Website

I started thinking about his age: He was fortyish by the time of The Prisoner and I suddenly realised how relatively little I knew about his earlier work. I could remember seeing Hell Drivers, but that was about it.

The rest was all a bit vague. I decided to put things right......

And one thing led to the next......

And nothing I have seen or read has reduced my enthusiasm.

I agree Moor Larkin, Mcggohan is a great looker, but are you a guy or a girl?
Do not forget, a lot of celebs are dealt with by make-up and all sorts.

We all need heroes. I daresay none of us would recognise most actors out of the studio and that's probably just as it should be.

You're right about the make-up of course. Disney also transformed him by judicious lighting, in Dr. Syn especially. Early British reviewers seem to have seen him as something out of the norm; one referred to his 'lop-sided' looks. I guess he came in with that generation of different lookers like Richard Harris, Alan Bates, Albert Finney and so forth.

Here are 2 PR stills of McGoohan from the late 1950's when he was an up-and-comer at Rank. I don't think he needed any help from Disney to look good!

The bottom one came out OK, but the other one says 'unavailable'. Great picture.

I don't think you'll get much argument from me.........

.......but I had to smile wryly when Dr. Christopher Syn makes his first appearance in the movie, having only previously been seen as a snarling scarecrow. The lighting did it's magic and there was a kind of heavenly chorus on the soundtrack as the good vicar emerged from the mask....
