British Actress Rosamund John Dies

LONDON (AP) -- Rosamund John, one of Britain's most popular actresses during
World War II, has died. She was 85.
John, who dominated the British screen with such 1940s films as ``Green for
Danger'' and ``Johnny in the Clouds,'' died in London Oct. 27, according to
newspaper death notices. No information on the cause of death was available.
Noted for her strong political views, John once said she wanted to stand for
election to Parliament. She never did, but her husband John Silkin became a
high-ranking member of the Labor Party. She was often seen watching him speak
in the House of Commons.
Born Nora Rosamund Jones in London in 1913, she made her movie debut in ``The
Secret of the Loch,'' a 1934 film about a scientist out to prove the existence
of the Loch Ness Monster. She went on to became one of Britain's most admired
leading ladies.
``In those days, we were much more ladylike than they are now,'' Britain's
Independent newspaper quoted her as saying recently. ``We used to admire ladies
in French films because in them actresses were allowed to be real. But English
films made us unreal because the audience liked being taken out of the reality
of the war.''
John once said that her big break came when she was up a tree picking cherries.
``A girl I knew in an agency phoned to say Leslie Howard was looking for
someone, and she had suggested me,'' she said.
After a screen test, Howard gave John a leading role in the 1942 film
``Spitfire.''
The following year, Howard cast her in another popular wartime piece, ``The
Gentle Sex,'' and in ``The Lamp Still Burns,'' with Stewart Granger.
John's final film was 1956's ``Operation Murder,'' but by then she had largely
abandoned her acting career for politics and her marriage to Silkin, who died
in 1987.
John is survived by her son with Silkin. Funeral arrangements were unknown.
