My nomination for sexiest actor has got to be Anton Walbrook. I know he was homosexual but so what, that doesn't mean he couldn't be attractive to ladies. He had such presence on screen and the way he flirted with the housemaid in Gaslight was very, very sexy!!!!! A very, very underated actor and largely forgotten today.

Hi, Doris,

You are so right. Anton Walbrook radiated sex appeal, especially as the demanding, dark, aloof but super sexy Boris Lermontov in The Red Shoes (1948). Few could command a scene the way Walbrook did.

Best,

Barbara

Thanks Barbara, glad you agree. My favourite Anton moment in the Red Shoes is the scene where he finds out Vicky has married Julian Craster. He's wearing the red velvet smoking jacket and he just simmers with
controlled rage and then smashes his hand in the mirror. What I wouldn't give to arouse such passion in a man like that!!!!! Time to take the tablets I think.

Cheers

Dead easy Doris.
Just tell me that you've given my railway periodical collection to 'Oxfam'.

Hi, Doris,

Anton certainly had the dark intense eyes for fury. Didn't they just burn and glint with fury?
And can anyone compete with his glamour in wearing a topcoat over his shoulders and dark sun glasses?
Just the best Lermontov. Yet, he can turn around and become the sad, weary-worn emigre in Blimp. What a fine actor.

Best,

Barbara

Have you seen his Prince Albert in Victoria the Great? He even manages to make that role sexually charged. I'd forgotten about the topcoat and sunglasses. Such elegance! I always imagine he would smell of very expensive shaving soap and freshly starched white shirts, so much more refined than JOOP!!!!

Cheers Judy

Hi, Judy,

Oh, lucky you! I've never seen Anton in Victoria the Great. It's hard to track down his earlier films. Wouldn't you have loved to see him on stage, especially in a passionate scene or one where he is angry? He had great presence and left us much too soon.

Everything about him just reeked of class and elegance, from his cuff links to his choice of shaving soap. Was he like that in person, I wonder. I am thinking definitely yes.

Smashing the mirror is the easy part. It's the red velvet smoking jacket I am waiting for.

Hi Barbara

I actually had to watch Victoria the Great again today to remind myself of how wonderful he looked in the uniforms he had to wear. I have both Victoria the Great, SixtyGlorious Years and Gaslight on video but haven't any means of copying them or you could gladly have copies.

Yea I think he was just like that in real life. Quite aloof, but elegant, immaculately turned out at all times. I really am fascinated by the man.

Cheers

The anorak can go,but I think I'll retain the lightweight cotton undershirt with underarm aertex gussets.
I prefer to liken myself to Basil Rathbone with the smoking jacket, but I fear that a more likely resemblance would be Rupert Rigsby.

Jacky

By the way,has anybody seen my 500 issue run of 'Railway Magazine'?Only I was just looking on E-bay and I noticed that the Oxfam shop in Brighton is offering a similar run.Might be a good indicator of the value of my set.Must be in the loft.
Think I might have a cold-sore coming.I'll just check in the mirror.

Oh, oh, Judy. We'd better run for it. I think Jacky's found us out.

Hi, Judy,

Thanks for the good thoughts about the Anton films. I have some old photos of him; if you'd like to see them, PM me and I'll see if I can email them to you. Might not work but worth a try to view this fascinating man.

Best,

Barbara

"Darling" suggested this in our discussion of "Layer Cake", and I agree, so here's to another sexy actor, Daniel Craig, the new Mr. Bond. Dirk Bogarde is still No.1 in my opinion, but there's always room for one more

Craig doesn't have a traditionally handsome face. In fact, he can play scruffy (The Mother) quite well, and the leaner he gets, the more Life's experiences show on his face. But he has a runner's body and more important, he has an edgy presence, a stillness on screen, icy blue eyes viewing a distant scene, and a steely toughness which can quickly shift into focused tenderness that make him very sexy.

Best,

Barbara
