Thanks for that page, Budge!
I was going to say that Birk was being a tad modest - people did and do say he was a very beautiful man! But then I saw some of those small pics at the top of page two! He looks like Kevin Eldon, Actor in one or two of those!!

As I've said before, this is my favourite of his screen performances, rather than The Servant or Death In Venice, which have been more critically-acclaimed but are also more depressing! He still won a BAFTA award though.
Dirk plays television reporter Robert Gold who leaves his wife (Pauline Yates) and family for aspiring model and actress Julie Christie, who quickly becomes involved with other men, including a disastrous marriage to an Italian millionaire. Although it was sad that he didn't take her back in the end, she probably got what she deserved! This is his first close-up, interviewing Julie, who has just been discovered by a TV crew, swinging her handbag in a London street: ![]() Tossing a coin at their country retreat*: "Heads we do, tails we don't" ![]() It looks like a publicity still, but is in fact a lucky capture as he looks round a dilapidated cottage: ![]() In this scene, the couple voice their frustration at not being able to spend more time together: ![]() *I have identified the location with help from IMDB. It's called Skindles, in Maidenhead and is featured here: The Maidenhead Advertiser describes it as being "the premier hotel for adulterers", once upon a time, which ties in with the film as Dirk and Julie were supposedly having a "dirty weekend there". Sadly, it has been derelict for over a decade. I've just been reading a few articles about ambitious plans to redevelop the site with a new luxury hotel and yesterday's paper reveals a further setback: Maidenhead Advertiser Online - Skindles owners go into administration You never know what you're going to find. I was just wondering about the location and now I've discovered all this - I'd never even heard of Skindles until now! I'll dedicate this post to Barbara, but think I might have to e-mail you 90% of the captures of Dirk Bogarde, and the film if you like, as there are already far too many to put up here. The first eight minutes of Darling took THREE HOURS to screencap this time yesterday, so this could take a long while to complete. Last edited by cornershop15; 01-07-2009 at 09:36 AM.. |

Thanks, Barbara. I'll be doing some more 'caps' from the film in a couple of days.
Cheery bye!, Cornershop P.S. Please post without my reply next time - it'll save space! |

I use the Windows Media Player, which opens up when a DVD disc is inserted into the laptop (in my case). Right-clicking the screen, DVD Features appears among the options and then I choose Capture Image, often frame by frame of the film/episode. Sometimes I only want to find one actor's appearance and scan through scenes until I can find them. That's how I get my 'along the way' captures - there are always going to be striking images of other stars while I'm searching. Similarly, the 'inbetween' shots, that I first mentioned to Lord Brett at art director Bob Bell's thread, can be achieved by freezing the image to just before a door opens, or closes, for example. I've done some great stuff for the leading stars, such as Patrick McGoohan, Derren Nesbitt and Alfred Burke, but I it's often those in minor roles that I'm focusing on - like Colin Gordon (Department S) and Georgina Cookson (The Prisoner)recently. Yesterday, while preparing for the Susan Penhaligon and Deborah Grant threads, I found some brilliant images of Frank Finlay in Bouquet of Barbed Wire)! That's what makes it interesting doing this - there'll always be a striking image of someone. Thank you for your interest!, Cornershop EDIT - Barbara, I left out two captures of Dirk that I should have put in the previous post and I will have them for you next time. Thanks very much for that. I work on a Mac and if I press "apple", "shift" and "4" it changes the mouse cursor so I can highlight an image and photograph it. I guess that's the same thing! I understand that searching for really striking images must take ages. You do a great job.

You wouldn't be able to get through, Windyridge! Thanks for your encouragement. I'm glad you did ask here as it could be useful to others, but now wish I'd written my reply at that 'Image Grabbing' thread I saw recently. I've never had a Mac computer, so that jargon's a little lost on me - what does '4' do?
Here are the two screencaps of Dirk that I mistakenly omitted a couple of days ago. As I'm trying to post them in sequence, I can tell you that both of them follow the first one where he's just looked at his watch, which I probably should have left out. In this capture, he's interviewing a distinguished old writer, played by Hugo Dyson (in his only screen appearance, apparently ):![]() In this scene, he's on a train with Julie Christie. He's a bit tired but she knows how to wake him up! : ![]() Notice the British Rail logo there? Hope Barbara likes these images as much as I do. Last edited by cornershop15; 16-07-2009 at 03:03 AM.. |
