Re: Eric Portman

An excellent episode of 'Strange Report' on ITV4 this evening....

With Anthony Quayle and guest stars (both from
OOOAIM, Eric Portman and Hugh Burden...) it was
almost like a Powell and Pressburger reunion, in fact !

Eric played a ex-Nazi (no surprise there - as in 49th Parallel, all those
years
ago....). He looked rather frail, but his speaking voice was
still good, unlike his voice in 'Deadfall', which was rather slurred at
times.

Incidentally, was 'Strange Report' Eric's last appearance on tv and film?

Eric Portman - such a wonderful actor and so very little information to be found about him. A difficult man, I belieive, but those who got past his cold exterior referred to him with some sort of affection. His last appearances are depressing - particularly in 'The Prisoner' - as it is reported that his memory was shot to pieces and so had to use 'idiot' boards. Despite his haughty arrogant features, he didn't portray Nazi's as often as one might expect - however, that face meant he usually played other types of haughty arrogant characters! His young gypsy in 'Maria Marten' is something to be seen!

Was he an 'ex Nazi' in the Bedford Incident??? That was a brilliant cold war yarn

I saw, for the first time in years, one of his earliest appearances on screen. It was "Murder in the Red Barn" (1935). It was interesting seeing him cast as a Gypsy but he was very good in spite of the strange casting.

It was a wonderful treat
To hear the patter of horsey feet.

Thanks For The Buggyride recorded by Percival Mackey
