I'll be surprised if there are many here who have a clue where Houghton is but I'll be skirting it on my way to the Glebe Centre in Murton on Saturday.

You won't find many EUCT in Houghton

At the moment there's a chap who used to play Upper Class Twits doing an advert for some on-line company, about 'one last minute' or something like that - but he seems to have lost an arm!!! Is he 'playing' the role or is he genuine. He says he's had his face slapped on every continent!!! Even with one arm!!!

Good morning boys.

Yer right MarkyB although we're up there frequently and he's never invited us in for tea!!! I do remember that he used to play a good 'drunk' - you know - Private Picklepuss in - what was it? Privates Progess?? I think he took the job in 'The Royal' (which is based in North Yorks) because he could not be arsed to travel all over the country - can't say I blame him!!

Good morning boys.

Jeremy lloyd used to be the upper class twit in loads of films in the 60's and 70's then turned to writing, very successfully. Leslie Phillips and Terry Thomas will always be close to my heart, great actors. What about James Villiers who always played the upper class role, another good actor.

Now if it was Butler's, Eric Blore was the King.

You're right,Dave - the fact there is always a queue outside says it all and I have tried them. They are delicious, cooked in beef dripping and they are the favourites of Rick Stein. However, there is a tint of jealousy against the Magpie as other chippies are complaining to the council about the queues,as it is causing a hindrance to pedestrians. I have been to Whitby countless times, and the queue is noticable because it stands out - but it is no hindrance.

That's right - actually the best F&C I've ever had were at Rick Steins own chippie in Padstow. Superlative!

How about Nicholas Phipps? He always seemed extremely earnest, sort of a lower-drawer Noel Coward as someone once said. The judge on DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE, many others. Plus being a screenwriter of note -- he's credited on DOCTOR.

I still think Ray Allen is the finest ventroloquist we haveever produced!

I agree with that one MarkyB but I also liked Arthur Worsley, especially when his dummy says to him, "Look at me Goy, when I'm talking to you". He could never quite get to say his 'b's and he never changed his face. We surely miss these old troopers; Les Dawson; Franke Howerd, et al.

PS. Is Ray Allen still alive?

Good morning boys.

I always found Phipps 'altogether' and too self-assuured to really be considered a 'twit'.

A little supercilious on occasion, but never scatty...

Nigel Bruce always did a good upper class twit, even though it was in American films pretending to be in England. Particularly bumbling in Suspicion and Rebecca, not to mention Dr Watson, of course.
