Default George Chisholm...

What do we know about this actor/comedian from the fifties to his death? I used to see him around my home town of Flitwick, Bedfordshire a bit, but not for a few years now.

Wasn't he a regular on the Black and White Minstrel Show?
A very fine jazz trombonist I seem to recall.

Several of his recordings (singles and LPs) are on CD....

The booklet notes might have some useful information

Wasn't he Arthur Daley's nemesis in Minder played by Patrick Malahide?

The character in 'Minder' that you're thinking about Sam was actually named - Albert "Charlie" Chisholm.

And very funny he was too.

I thought I remembered him from that as well.

I seem to picture him in a children's programme from the early 60s, too.

All the best

I remember he was a very fine trombonist, whose musical talents were later overtaken by appearing in comedy sketches on TV. He died a number of years ago in a retirement home.

Enter "George Chisolm trombone" as a Google search and a lot of entries appear.
This one is quite interesting, with stories straight from the horse's mouth:
live band stories from George Chisholm

(Jerry Colonna was also an accomplished musician (also a trombonist) who became known principally as a comedian after straining his tessitura in recordings of songs like "Ebb Tide")

Gentleman of jazz is about right. I once spoke to him on the railway station and he said he was on his way to York for a gig. He had his trombone with him and he took it out of the case and showed it to me. He was pleasent and seemed glad that I was interested. The train came, he got on it, and I never saw him again.
I've got a video of Christmas no. ones (top of the pops) and he appears briefly on that, the only time I've seen him on telly.
He must have been quite a star in the fifties.
