Thumbs up George Sanders, by Brian Aherne

'A Dreadful Man : A Personal, Intimate Book About George Sanders' by Brian Aherne, and Benita Hume.

Just finished this book, which I heartily recommend.
Has anyone else read it?
If anyone is on the fence, or is curious, I'll give a review in the next week or so.

I read it some years back. I seem to recall that it was just as much about Brian Aherne as George Sanders!
I preferred the biography called "George Sanders - An exhausted Life" by Richard Vanderbeets. Sanders autobiography "Memoirs of a professional Cad" is also worth reading.

I would like to echo my good friend Ascoyne's recommendation. The Vanderbeets book is a great read with some great detail about Sanders' disastrous business dealings.

I guess I'm just not that big a fan of actors bio's.
The last one's I went for heel under head, were Callow's 'Charles Laughton: A Difficult Actor', and Dirk Borgarde's rambling memoirs.

Yes, Aherne was the fascinating character in 'A Dreadful Man' that kept my attention.
How I do love Aherne!

I guess we must be attracted to the same actors. I, too, have read, and enjoyed, Callow's biography of Laughton. I hope that Elliot's book on Dennis Price becomes available again soon; I can certainly recommend that one.
I have not read any of Bogarde's memoirs. I became a little doubtful regarding the accuracy of his memory when I watched a TV interview in which he claimed that Dennis Price was the only gay actor who appeared in the film "Victim."....Oh, really, Sir Dirk?

Yeah, Borgarde's many books are largely dubious about history, and no doubt self-serving, but fun reads, can't be denied.

Raoul Walsh's autobiography, has the fairest portrait of Erroll Flynn, of all that I know of, if you're interested.

I'm very curious, as I had no idea two of the best actors in British Silent films had collaborated over a book!!!

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

For those of you in the London area, there is a copy of the second edition of my Dennis Price book in the Local Studies wing of the Croydon Library.

Yes please WF - perhaps you could give the publishers name and author's name too. Might buy it or get it out of the library.

Good morning boys.

One should be placed in the Westminster Library at Leicester Square which takes almost all books on cinema, theatre, drama etc.

The British Library Public Catalogue is very good for this sort of query.
They say:
A dreadful man / Brian Aherne, assisted by George Sanders and Benita Hume.
New York : Simon and Schuster, c1979.
ISBN: 0-671-24797-2

For American books I also use the Library of Congress Online Catalogue

I got it quite readily using the local library service. A friend who is a big fan of Sanders owns it and tells me that second-hand copies often turn up. Have you tried Abe books?
Surely the original edition pre-dates 1979 by some years?

P.S. Just looked this up on abebooks which lists 52 copies of this title (1979 IS the date) some selling for as little as £0.52p. Not forgetting the addition of the postage from the U.S. it must be a good buy, even for the most poverty-stricken amongst us (like myself!).

Looks like it'll have to be "or so" --in the next couple days, I'll try.
Been having a lot of computer troubles, etc., and haven't had time.

There are over a hundred copies online, if you go to the best booksearch tool for used and out-of-print :
AddALL Used and Out of Print book search
You'll surely find one cheap (the fools on Amazon start a hardcover at 4 & 10 cents). There are plenty of good hardback 1st's listed for under two-1/2- pounds, on Alibris and Abebooks.
Signed copies, with inscriptions such as: "To...my thanks & goodwishes. Brian Aherene 1979." --start at 20 pounds up.

Easy to get and well worth having, the way books should be!
