There was a short programme on him on ITV not that long ago. An interview with some clips celebrating his career. Not exactly the South Bank Show.

He appeared in Holby in 2004 and made a personal appearance on Songs of Praise a year and a half ago.

He was a genuine war hero as well. He was an officer in the 7th Battalion (LI) The Parachute Regiment. On D-Day this Battalion made contact with Major Howard at the Orne Bridge now called Pegasus Bridge. Todd was the officer who made contact. In The Longest Day he played Major Howard and the meeting with Todd was one scene. In D-Day The 6th of June he played the commander of his Battalion in the filming of the same scene.

Default Richard Todd

Thanks for your replies - couldn't agree more about him being a fantastic bloke -much underrated and I can't understand why he's still without a knighthood when you see some of the specimens who receive them! He's still around and living in Lincolnshire - I'm reading his autobiography at present and thoroughly enjoying it.
He committed so much time to the theatre and wasn't willing to stay in Hollywood which probably explains the decline in his film career.

I have read one or two articles about him in the weekend papers over the years. I can imagine his childrens' suicides must make it difficult for anyone to do a 'Parkinson' on him nowadays. Too awful.

He never did much, if any TV did he? I always think of him in the Kenneth More mould but More did the Father Brown TV series and Forsyte before that I believe. That put him back in the public eye after the cultural shifts of the Sixties.

He did quite a bit of TV work, in minor roles
e.g.
Holby City (1 ep in 2004)
The Royal (1 ep in 2003)
Midsomer Murders (1 ep in 2003)
Murder, She Wrote (1 ep in 1989)
Dr Who (1 ep in 1982)

to name but a few. Check the full list on the IMDb

He also appeared in some documentaries, usually about D-Day or the Dambusters.
He did a This Is Your Life in 1988

there is also his theatre work - he must hold somesort of record for starring in The Business of Murder in London for 8 years. I think he does charity work for the forces and a hospice in Lincolnshire. It takes strength to still stand at 87 after such a tragic loss.

Here here elder..... I saw him in Grantham some years ago as he was hurrying on his business. I think he married into the 'Palethorpe' family, who are, or were, in the pork business- not too sure about that.

You can imagine him as Guy Gibson or any other of the officer/leader types! Solid, dependable, honest, reliable. A few of the qualities that our actors and politicians of today, have these days!

Good morning boys.

Wonderful actor in his day. I really liked him in Chase A Crooked Shadow, great thriller much underrated! Hardly ever gave anything other than a great performance. Greatly admired.

Richard Todd married Catherine Grant-Bogle in 1949. They divorced in 1970. He married Virginia Mailer in 1970, and divorced her in 1992. His full name is Richard Andrew Palethorpe-Todd.

I'v read and enjoyed his two autobiography's "CAUGHT IN THE ACT" 1986 and "IN CAMERA" 1989. Both my copies are hardback published by Hutchinson I'd loved to get them sighed.

Richard Todd is one of my favourites ... loved him Venetian Bird and Stagefright. Had the pleasure of seeing him on stage in the 80s - marvellous.

I wish I had claws.

Default He is Guy Gibson.

Whether or not his portrayal of GG is correct, for me GG was just like RT.

I have a real prob with a re-make of 'The Dambusters', who else could do Gibson?

Thumbs up Richard Todd

A great British actor and a gentleman. He is a man who has seen the many highs and the many lows that life can have in store.

And for me he will always be one of the best Robin Hood's!
