That's particularly ironic given the anti-paedophile rants by many Murdoch titles. Even to the extent of one of them publishing details about them to set the lynch mob loose on them - shame they then published the details about a paediatrician by mistake. And then MySpace being bought by the Murdoch empire. Steve |

It is a joke!
All the people on MySpace, who "assume the identity" -of a past actor, filmmaker, writer,et alia - are not necessarily pretending to be that person. Only a small percentage of these "famous men and women", are not being forthright with who they really are. Most, I've found, are explicit that they are only doing an "homage" to their preferred star. It's a way to keep the memory of these people alive, and ...as Wide said: "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth." I'd be willing to bet, that there are far more "ordinary people Profiles" on MySpace, which are maintained by disingenuous people, who are pretending to be something they are not --if not exactly pedophiles! At any rate, I don't think the pedophiles are the one's with Pages for Edward Everett Horton, or Moira Shearer or, Alfred Hitchcock! Completely understandable, it is, that it would look like Schizophrenia run rampant , if you've only looked at it for a few minutes. It would be factious of me to suggest it is a Generational Thing. But...... I do think maybe it's being taken a bit too humorlessly by a couple of you fellers. Could someone explain to me why it seems unnerving, or in poor taste to them? I'm genuinely curious . Perhaps I'm too close to the amoral sociopathic crazies to judge accurately!? ![]() All I know for sure, are my own reasons for having a "Mischa Auer Profile" on MySpace: I admire the man enormously, and I'm interested in discussing movies, etc. with those who are of similar mind. Isn't it better to keep the names of these old stars, in currency, then to have them slip into obscurity? Maybe I'm delusional. I'm open to that possibility! Quote:

You mean - none of these are real?!!
Oh wait... that's right... I was on the wrong website. MyChanneling gets us the real - uh - "people". Of sorts. (I'd recommend you avoid your home computers for this - after all, if they can find out your IP, the phrase "virus in your computer" may have a ghostly replacement.) |

Those who have celebrity Pages on MurdochSpace, should only be so lucky, to be haunted by the likes of Ida Lupino, or Dashiell Hammett....
Ghosts went out with the lightbulb; A sense of irony, appears to have gone out with Cyberspace. I for one, have never run into one of these people, who were carrying the I am Humphrey or I am Bette thing beyond the simple first greeting: "I'm a big fan of *yours* too". Is it Schizophrenic and tasteless to sign your comments with a dead persons name? I'll answer that, since it doesn't look like others will: Only if you really believe it, or are trying to fool someone. The way I see the Internet, it is mostly a virtual, made-up place, where most users assume identities untethered to their normal social obligations. It's play time.I believe the John Llewellyn Moxey on BritMovie and IMDb, is the same John Llewellyn Moxey that directed many movies I've enjoyed. There is no reason to doubt that. It would be madness for someone to "take on" the name of a celebrity who is alive, and pretend to be them (John Hinckley moxey, if you please). However, I remember reading the first Thread Mr. Moxey participated in, on this Site --and yes: doubted he was, of his true identity. {this is unrelated to my main point, I thought I'd mention it though, because it's amusing to me, if no one else}.Once again: I've yet to see anyone on TheirSpace who is doing such a thing. Those who are using celebrity names -- are doing it over 95% of the time, out of sincere respect. What's wrong with that? P.S. - the photog, original poster, who created the Vera Day profile (who has the weakness for ALL CAPS), looks to have more or less abandoned the Page. And he never claimed to be anything other than who he was, like over 95% of us horrid imposter's! Quote:

I was watching a relatively excellent MAN OF THE YEAR (Robin Williams runs for US Prez and wins), and Christopher Walken said, "Mark Twain once wrote that the difference between truth and fiction is that fiction needs to be credible."
I think being a fan has pleasures and values unto itself. I don't get much value from being a fan of Margaret Rutherford or Laughton or Basil Rathbone, or all of the others, except that occasionally I'll get a 'thank you' from someone who discovers their excellence for the first time. Perhaps this is the lesson I'll learn - sharing is a reward unto itself. So, to my husband, I'll use that gem of wisdom. "No, I didn't leave the wet towel on the floor to get in your way. I'm sharing it down there." Ya think he'll fall for that? "To love, honor and fall for my bad jokes" - I'm almost sure that was part of the vows. Alright. I'll shut now. Or soon......I shouldn't have dragged your name, Mr. Moxey, into my loony, windy apologia.
I have a great respect for the artists of the past, and..uh, I guess I felt there was an insinuation, that those crazy MySpace Celebrity Profile Snatchers (like yours truly), were desecrating the memory of dead actors, etc. Never said I was "tasteful", and I don't think I'm tasteless either. Don't know if I fully get the Wet Towel analogy, Christine, but your summation was good enough. I should have left the Thread alone. I'm really overwrought; it's hard work being a virtual celebrity impersonator , and impersonate myself at the the same time. No sad songs for me.

Phew!! That's a relief!!........
Personally speaking, as Patrick McGoohan is patently still alive..... I found it a bit strange that somebody should want to BE him. Also, whilst you are evidently clear that it is a joke, I'm not sure everybody else is - and I would refer to you to the somewhat plaintive messages people were sending to 'him', that I referred to in my earlier Post. I'm not sure it's generational either. My son has recently embarked on his own Myspace page and excitedly reported to me that "Jessica Simpson" was on there..... ........... Fortunately, due to my Google-stumbling I was able to inform him that the chances of Jessica Simpson being Jessica Simpson was somewhat remote - I had some trouble persuading him to be as cynical as his old man...... .... I think this is where the 'serious' worries others have mentioned might creep in. There is no fool like a young fool, as they don't say. Anyhow, the experience of Myspace fantasy does give fixated groupies like me pause for thought, however third person I may wish to remain.....
