A very fine actor. My particular favourite film of his is Ill Met By Moonlight, not least because it seems to be pretty close to Patrick Leigh Fermor's own account of events on Crete.

Cheers, and thanks, Fell You're right about Ill Met By Moonlight (1957). Xan Fielding worked closely with Bogarde and crew as a consultant, having been part of the events.

I spotted a Dirk Bogarde lookalike whilst watching an episode of Thriller from the 70s. It was the brother of Kay Kendall, Cavan Kendall. He had a beard and longer hair but very similar in facial features and the eyes. I've just twigged that he was also in Sexy Beast as Ray Winstone's pal in Spain.

    A wonderful comment, Marky B

Quite a few people came to know and appreciate Dirk through his books. Starting last year with the reissue of "A Postillion Struck By Lightning" each of his autobiographies will be reissued. "Snakes and Ladders" is due out 6 April. I like the thought of his living on for new generations through his words.

    Hello, Freddy,

Thanks for seconding MarkyB about Dirk.

By the way, I rewatched "Brief Encounter" in order to make more informed comments to you in that thread. It's been a while since I saw BE. I'll post a response to you tomorrow about Laura and Alec. I also came across an interesting interview with Trevor Howard on BE with some startling comments on his part. I'll post that too in the BE thread.

    Best,

I have been working my way through some George Formby films and the next one I am planning to watch is 'Come On George'. Apparently Dirk Bogarde is in it as an extra. Anyone know whereabouts and if he can be seen on screen. I watched it a few years ago and completely failed to spot him. A couple of weeks ago I watched Carol Reed's 'The Key' and did not see Michael Caine on screen at any time so my lack of observational skills seems to still be with me.

    Hello, Everyone,

Join me in a toast to Sir Dirk Bogarde, born 28 March, 1921, in Hampstead, London, to Ulric and Margaret Van den Bogaerde. Allow me a minute of Bogarde news as some of you ask from time to time:

I hope you will come and view the official Dirk Bogarde website that launched today in honour of his birthday. At the website, you can view never before seen Bogarde home movies, hundreds of new photos, and other features. It's a visual treat, and I think is beautifully done.

    The Dirk Bogarde Estate

If you enjoy discussion, I would love to have you at my new SirDirkBogarde e-group at Yahoo, also launched to link to the official Bogarde website:

    SirDirkBogarde : SirDirkBogarde

Thanks to everyone in here for all of the encouraging words. You know that I always look at the members in BritMovie as friends and fellow fanatics about Brit film!

    All the very best,

Not in his day. He was Worldwide Number One in a poll of British Film fans in 1959, as recorded by F. Maurice Speed in Film Review.

Patrick McGoohan, in an interview, explained that he got his movie contract with Rank 'because' of Dirk Bogarde. McGoohan was asked to fill in for Sir B. on a screen-test for one of Rank's putative Starlets. The executives were so struck with him, rather than the woman, that he reckons he got the job offer on the back of those rushes...........

I wonder if Sir B. ever knew that? And I wonder what he was up to that day, so as to be unavailable for that casting session.......

Busy being a Movie Star I suppose...

Many, many thanks, Terry, and to everyone, for the kind comments. I am really happy with the website results too. Brock Van den Bogaerde, his team setting it up and those who did the essays, John Coldstream, Philip Hoare, including the Actor essays on British Cinema and European Cinema that I had the privilege to write, are-- fingers crossed-- the very best we could do. What you see is the output of whole hearts and souls in creating it. It took 18 months but the labour of love was worth it in ending with what I hope is an interesting, documented, scholarly approach vs. gush and gossip.

The Independent did a six-page spread on the website today.

All the best and thanks again!

    Barbara

The private world of Dirk Bogarde

He was Britain's most complex and elusive screen idol - phobic about allowing outsiders to glimpse the man behind the roles. But now a treasure trove of photographs and notebooks reveal Dirk Bogarde as never before. Louise Jury reports

    Published: 28 March 2007

When Sir Dirk Bogarde, the matinée idol, star of European art-house cinema and author, died eight years ago, he left more material than most for any would-be biographer.

On top of over 60 films and 14 books, including several bestselling volumes of autobiography, there were cupboards packed with letters, photographs and film scripts left at the flat in Chelsea, west London, where Bogarde spent his final years.

It was left to his nephew, Brock Van den Bogaerde, to deal with them. He decided that before despatching any material of note to institutions for study by future generations, he should put together a website that would serve researchers and fans alike. The plan was to include everything "from magazine covers to his views on acting, his role in British cinema, in European cinema, in theatre and every book he ever wrote. It was such an enormous life, it really needed a website to put it all in perspective," he says.

The resulting 600-page site, The Dirk Bogarde Estate, is launched today on what would have been Bogarde's 86th birthday. It offers a reminder of the literary as well as the acting output of the star of films including The Blue Lamp, Darling and Death in Venice, but also a glimpse into the private world of one of the 20th century's more complex leading men. .....................................

Looks like a wonderful site, Barbara. Obviously, lots to explore. After a quick survey, it seems that there might be one omission here -- Dirk's writing for film. By which I mean, his re-writing of lines and scenes, as he did for I COULD GO ON SINGING (which was quite significant), and, from what I've read elsewhere, several other movies. Does the site have a discussion anywhere of his screenwriting? And did he ever try his hand at a full screenplay...? Thanks.

Edited to add: Of course -- he wrote MAY WE BORROW YOUR HUSBAND? That's briefly mentioned under Television.

I took another look at my copy of a book about the Q Theatre that Sir B. wrote a foreword for in the early 1990's, last night. He looked back on his days there with great nostalgia. His involvement with every aspect of the theatre, from prompting to cleaning toilets, he enjoyed so much and regretted never finding again..... the enthusiasm of youth!

He apparently first arrived at Q in something of a funk after being 'rejected' at the Old Vic and just stumbled into a job. In the text his recalled conversation is quite hilarious.
