Did he not play a bit of a rogue in "The Pink Panther" ?

Bedtime Story - he is a charming con-man.

Charming, and a loveable con-man but not a cad, bounder or a rogue

Niv is a cad in Happy Ever After. And you don't think being a thief is fairly bounderish? Or wouldn't you mind being burgled if the culprit had a nice 'tache?

Yes, Steve. Of course, Steve. Right as always, Steve.

    Whatever.

In your own mind, I'm sure.

    I'm sure there's a name for it.

Isn't Niv a compulsive liar in Paper Tiger? That's fairly caddish

And nobody has mentioned Guy Middleton

Yes, but then he redeems himself with great courage!

To steer this thread back on to Terry-Thomas...

I saw Too Many Crooks yesterday, which for some reason I'd never seen before. It was a good deal darker than I'd expected, and TT's character was truly reprehensible - not just a cad but a unscrupulous criminal!

He is allowed a couple of redeeming moments of genuine grief...
      Spoiler:
because he thinks his wife has been murdered

...but mainly he is a blackguard from start to finish and deserves everything he gets.

Sid James is oddly low in the cast list, but I guess his star was waning a bit before the Carry Ons; George Cole is a proto-Arthur Daley; Bernie Bresslaw is trading goofily on his Army Game persona; John Le M turns up as a judge; Terry Scott as a copper. But the real revelation is Brenda De Banzie as TT's wronged wife - I know she was great as the strong lass in Hobson's Choice, but her bursts of physical action here (chucking Bernie around and decking Cole!) are unexpected and very nicely done.

All in all, a bit of a joy.

He (Niven.) is a long way from being spotless in Separate Tables.

Hmm and I believe not so spotless in his personal life sometimes, as Dame Ann Leslie can testify. ( I must stop this gossiping)

Heart breaking to think that this is how he ended his days.

Rumour has it the cigarette holder was designed for those with a diastema, so Tarby couldn't resist

Still, it's nice to know that Tarbuck once did something faintly amusing.

I'm guessing the Alan Williams referred to was the early Beatles "manager" - a well known ducker & diver on Merseyside back in the day.
