My favourite Tom Bell performance is as a hired killer in the Protectors episode Shadbolt. The episode is structured as two long two-person scenes: Tom Bell and mousy librarian Georgina Hale, and Bell with his private eye target Robert Vaughn. Bell absolutely dominates the episode, forcing Vaughn to step up to the mark and give a really good performance himself.

name='hankoler']One of the best ,a great loss to the profession , i remember him well as jack the hat in the kray film , RIP.

Two contrasting styles in that film .... Tom as Jack the Hat, restrained and convincing, especially in the murder scene .... Steven Berkoff as Cornell, all 'Cockernee' and unconvincing.

I would have loved to have seen Tom on stage in 'Bent', a legendary performance by all accounts in which he apparently overshadowed Sir Ian McKellan quite considerably.

    Bats.

I had the privilege of working with him on the film 'Devils Gate' a few years ago which was shot on the Shetland Isles but sadly unreleased. He was a lovely generous guy & I got to know him quite well & we'd speak on the phone quite often, the last time I saw him was when I bumped into him in M&S in Brighton, he was just on his way out to north Africa to film his part in the 'Ancient Rome' series with David Warner. He then called me a few weeks later in the middle of filming 'Prime Suspect 7' & he was laughing about how little he had to do in it & that Frank Finlay had even less, that was the last time I spoke with him. A sad loss & he'll be sorely missed.
