It's a small world! In the staff room last week, a few of us were talking about The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in its various incarnations. While the recent film seemed decent enough, we concluded that the BBC version form the late 80s was still far more charming, even if the Mr and Mrs Beaver resembled the Yeti from Doctor Who. A teacher who pops in once a week to work with a child in my class then added: "I've always preferred the TV version. My father played the Professor in it".

Eyes open wide . . . ! Ms Aldridge . . . . ahh! I must admit that Last of the Summer Wine popped into my head, although that was quickly denounced. We then got on to "Tinker Tailor . . ." before the bell went for the end of break. I must admit I looked up Michael Aldridge's complete credits on IMDb for future reference!

The recent film was a noble attempt. But how can any film or TV show hope to get Aslan right? I still prefer the books.

Michael Aldridge was very good as the Professor in the 1988 BBC TV version. Aslan looked a bit fake and the girl playing Susan was much too old. She was actually only 14, but looked older.

I liked the way that Michael Aldridge handled the professor's line when the children came back. He tells them that they probably won't be able to get back to Narnia via the wardrobe but that with any luck they will get back there. He says that others have been to Narnia so of course the children ask how they'll know someone who'd been there. With a twinkle in his eye, the Professor says "Oh, you'll know"
