Sorry, I saw people posting Fred Macmurray and Freddie Mercury and thought it was par for the course to include the dead. I'm glad to hear he hasn't disappeared in his own country. That would be sad. I'm on a quest to find and watch his work, beyond the big, easy to find films where he generally appears in only a few scenes- excluding the Red Shoes, of course.

You're quite right, it does seem to be par for the course to wish deceased stars a happy birthday, wacko though it is!

I'm just being pedantic, I'm afraid.

    It is unnatural.
Might as well send them a birthday card!

All together now....WHO? Well, this is probably my favorite actor, and I feel like I'm one of about 10 people in the US who has the slightest idea who he is. Please tell me you Brits remember him and his great work. He is a very difficult actor to actually view, as a lot of his work appears to be lost, or inacessible to lowly Americans. For anyone who doesn't know, he was Conductor 71 in a Matter of Life and Death , and Julian Craster in The Red Shoes, and a hell of a lot of cruel (and sometimes inadvertently likeable) German soldiersAttachment 6643 and once even a kind of pimp! However he played many, many other types of roles, murderers, detectives, a great Scarlet Pimpernel on radio and tv, Shakespearean roles, you name it, he could do it, and all really well. He also got his heart broken by Ava Gardner a couple of times in Pandora and the Flying Dutchman and the Barefoot Contessa. It won't surprise me if you don't know who he is. My own 80 year old mother, who has always been a huge movie fan, who in fact got to see most of these when they actually came out, has no idea who this guy is. When I found that out, I got depressed. Do yourself a favor and revisit this actor's work. I'm still trying to see most of it.

Why not start a thread for him if there isn't one already? He's certainly popular around these parts. My fave role is his gay ballet-dancing commando (partnered to Reginald Beckwith ) in the excellent Circle of Danger

Well I certainly don't say WHO? Not with all the fine work he did with Powell & Pressburger. From The Spy in Black (1939) to Ill Met by Moonlight (1957) as well as the other things you mention and much more.

I expect that if you ask around a bit more you'll find that he's better known than you realise, even amongst Americans

A belated Happy Birthday to Douglas Slocombe whose long list of films is truly amazing. His superb black and white cinematography was a key ingredient in creating the insinuating and sinister atmosphere of The Servant (1963). His work in The Servant won him a BAFTA for "Best British Cinematography" as well as a "Best Cinematography Award" from the BSC (British Society of Cinematographers).

Barrett (Dirk Bogarde) erupts at Tony (James Fox) in The Servant.

Can't let today go without mentioning one of our greatest actors. Sir Alec Guinness was born on this day in 1914, died 2001.

A very Happy Birthday to Sir Alec Guinness. He ruled supreme as George Smiley in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and in "Smiley's People".
