My brother send out some personal belongings to his daughter in 1993. He dealt with him face to face and I have a copy of his cheque. The night before this transaction Escape from Alcatraz was on the television, my brother commented on this and Mr. McGooham gave him a wry smile. This man was never better than in the 60 minute version of Danger Man.

Who got him to do that ten minute radio spot at Xmas for Lew Grade's centenary? And what was the significance when Roger Moore made that huge theatrical pause in his voice-over when remarking that he and Pat used to play------------------ squash together..........

There's a surprising number of people on the internet who seem to have come across him over the years and nearly all remark what a nice bloke he was to them....... that'll do for me...

Nobody's perfect. He sounds to me simply like a guy who doesn't suffer fools gladly.

The odd quote in that regard that I've seen seem to be from people 'in the biz'. But most of them seem to qualify thier criticism by some after-thought like - 'Brilliant actor' or somesuch.....

The ones I really meant are the Joe Public accounts. From the waiter who served him in a restaurant to the chap who came across him shopping - they all seemed to find him amenable to their small requests for a moment.......... Of course, one never knows whether to believe anything one reads on the internet but they seem tucked away in such obscure places - why would anyone bother making it up? (Even John Gielgud referred to him as 'very good').......... Lots of magazine accounts from back in the Sixties carry complimentary comments about how 'straight' he was and an American interviewer in 1966 commented that

Not many people know the real McGoohan and that’s the way he likes it. One of his associates told me he had never been to his home and could think offhand of very few who had. “I believe,” McGoohan says, “that a performer has a right to a private life.” He rarely sees journalists, usually limits the all-powerful British press to 15 minutes per interview. Yet, instead of tearing him apart, they like him. For this is no affectation born of success. He was that way before reviewers began hailing ‘a brawny hulk of Irish muscle’ 11 years ago.

You may indeed know Patrick McGoohan but that is no excuse for being so unpleasant about him. I have met many 'celebrities' over the years and they have been a mix of nice people and complete bastards. In other words human beings. I like Patrick McGoohan's acting and enjoy watching him perform. I really do not care if he is saint or sinner. He is a talented man and has given great pleasure to many people for over 50 years. For that he deserves respect.

That's pretty much the picture I have of him too and I don't think what you said about him is disrespectful - it just means he's a complex chap, which is pretty obviously true.

Thanks for that, you get my drift.Quite right he is one talented guy and i do have the utmost respect for him,he is the main man and no other actor can touch him.He acted poor Rock Hudson off the screen in Ice Station Zebra and knocked them all into touch in Braveheart.I know he dislikes sycophants,so old bats is not in with a chance at all

In one interview McGoohan commented how nice Rock was towards him on the ISZ project. By Rock's standards he felt something of a nobody and was very appreciative of how friendly Rock was to him. So there's a bit of the sycophant in us all I guess....

Richard Widmark remarked, in the notes for The Moonshine War that McGoohan was not only one of the best actors he had worked with, but also one of the nicest. Coming from the guy who also said,"I think a performer should do his work and then shut up" that's nice too.

ANYBODY MET UP WITH THIS MYSTERIOUS CREATURE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS
Here's a nice one from quite recently:

The biggest influence on my own acting style besides Boris is Patrick McGoohan. Another dream of mine was to play opposite McGoohan in a film or theatre production. I thought and still think he would make a tremendous Dr Muller in the Mummy scenes I wanted to recreate. A complete long shot, but what the hell. So anyways, I left him a rambling voice mail begging him to come out of retirement for my little film, not expecting him to ever call back mind you! So two weeks later I'm driving home and an LA area number calls my cell phone. I say hello and McGoohan's unmistakable voice says in a slight Irish brogue, 'Is Conor there?' I almost drove off the road! I was stunned, speechless. I never expected him to return my phone call.

"He said, 'How can I help you son?', I then proceeded to babble incoherently about a Boris Karloff screen test, Yale, him playing opposite my Ardath Bey, mummies, monsters etc. - it must have sounded like total bullshit to him! He was then completely silent for about 10 seconds. I thought oh no, he's gonna unleash a Number Six-style tirade on me for wasting his time! Instead he laughed really hard and said, 'Conor, I don't do that stuff anymore, I've been retired for six years!' He told me to keep at it, never give up and to 'Stick with it Baby!' I thanked him for his time and that was it. It's a really good memory that will last a lifetime. I actually called him two weeks ago to get coffee since I'm living in LA now, but he is sadly not in good health. He did say when he felt better we'd meet up. It would be awesome to meet him. I do realise I'm a lucky bastard to even speak with him on the phone.

Sylvia Syms was listing her films at an interview event, and she got to THE QUARE FELLOW, and said only: "With the AWFUL Patrick McGoohan." But I bet she's a trifle difficult too. Although the other recipient of her scorn, Michael Winner, undoubtedly deserves it!

McGoohan made Ice Station Zebra in between filming episodes of The Prisoner, I just wonder why he didn't go on to appear in more films after that, his performance and presence in ISZ is amazing, certainly the best thing about the film BTW I heard Rock Hudson say that his favourite film was "Pillow Talk" !! but I think he said that on the Doris Day TV show

His first movie after all that was The Moonshine War which has a similar spirit of whimsy about it that was more successfully exploited in the contemporary 'Kelly's Heroes'. It co-starred the just deceased Lee Hazelwood, oddly enough (not to mention the great Richard Widmark). McGoohan played a craven, cowardly sort of character. He'd obviously had enough of heroes.....

In a magazine of the time Mr. McGoohan did mention that his next project was to be Tai Pai or Shogun (I forget which) a Clavell adaption that didn't happen for many more years. Kenneth Griffith records that McGoohan was involved in financing/enabling Griffith's South African documentaries.

In the same interview that McGoohan mentioned Clavell's story I think he also mentioned a film about Cecil Rhodes (I may have made that bit up I'll have to read the magazine again.)

He played a solid supporting part in the 1971/72 Royal Film, Mary, Queen of Scots as well. There's a lovely picture of him in the brochure for that movie, with his arm round Trevor Howard, who's wearing an incongruous 'beanie-hat'...

Having moved to America he seems to have next tried a directing job ..............
