Its so true, smoking looks very cool and a ciggie is a great prop for an actor though notoriously difficult to film and maintain continuity of the length of the fag from scene to scene! the introductory scene in Dr No when Connery lights his fag and announces "Bond, Jaimsh Bond" is priceless and Lazenby as you point out, equally cool! OHMSS is one of my fav Bond films, cheers for reminding us of George. When the smoking ban arrives for public spaces and work places in July will they start censoring films that feature people smoking? Imagine watching a Bond film in the afternoon on TV with the violence toned down and the smoking scenes cut out!! Heaven forbid! (im a lifelong non-smoker by the way, orrible smell! keep it in the movies only!)

Can there be a more enticing advert for smoking ...?

The scene in The Red Shoes where Julian (Marius Goring) is playing piano to Vicky (Moira Shearer) while she has lunch. Julian is smoking and the length of his cigarette keeps changing between each shot. It shrinks, grows, shrinks & grows again

He probably smoked about 40 fags at least during the course of filming the scene! thats a classic example though

In The Jacket on the other hand Keira Knightley smokes cigarettes which magically hardly ever even show signs of burning down, hardly ever have smoke curling up from them and hardly ever touch her lips ... it must be the worst portrayal of a chain-smoker by a non-smoker, ever.

The smoking habits of 1950's America was frightingly portrayed in the film "Good Night and Good Luck" I've never been so conscious of people smoking so heavily in a film, very authentic I guess and quite scary! We could compile a very morbid list of film stars from that era who succumbed to cancer through ciggies!

I've never understood why a non-smoker would do it - strikes me as just about the most repulsive thing one can inflict upon oneself.

I did it for a stage performance every night for six weeks ..... I had given up a few years earlier and it got me started again. It was a long time before I was able to give up a second time.

Gives an actor something to do with their hands - just another form of prop I suppose. I remember Michael Caine giving advice to actors once on a TV masterclass about the dangers with continuity when it comes to smoking on film. Personally I think that smoking only has glamour in b/w movies ala 'Now Voyager' and film noirs.
