Robert Taylor (Spangler Arlington Brough) from Nebraska.

If people are including Hugh Grant then his namesake Cary is a prime contender.

Roger Moore (except for the man who haunted himself) and needless to say his role in the Saint is out of bounds for criticism.

    Robert Redford

    Lewis Collins (SAS)

Richard Gere (admit he wasn't half bad in the Mothman Prophecy or for that matter in Unfaithful)

Pearce Brosnan (except for Seraphim Falls)

I watched Richard Gere in Breathless last night and my Taiwanese/Chinese girlfriend said that the movie was "so-so". I asked her why and she said that Gere was too handsome to be taken seriously. I replied that Breathless was just good entertainment and Richard played his part well, ie, with passion, energy, and intensity. She saw the logic of my argument and said that she would try and enjoy movies on a purely emotional level in the future and not try and analyse them so much . . .

The problem I find with Gere is he's always cast as this almost indestructible self- confident goody that's always going to emerge from the proverbial barrel of shit holding a gold sovereign. It's not just the looks it's also the smugness that he exudes too.

First Knight was almost sickeningly predictable.

Internal Affairs on the other hand was probably his only villainous role- and one of his more enjoyable films.

Still the wife likes him so what do I know?

The girlfriend was round again tonight and we'd been playing some old skool rap, so I suggested watching Breakin'. Normally she likes to watch something "heavy", but I wasn't in the mood for it tonight, which was why I opted for some good music and fancy footwork. Following the movie I asked her the million dollar question: "Did you like the movie?" She answered "yes, the dancing and music were great". The point is that sometimes you just wanna kick back and watch something that isn't too challenging. Don't get me wrong, I'm a thinker, but after a day at work I just want some eye candy . . . and why not battling breakers . . . or Richard Gere in Breathless come to that?

Jessica Alba. I don't actually fancy her, but she also can't act for toffee, no matter how small her bikini is.

Also Terrence Stamp still can't act after all these years, though he is a terrific writer - his three part autobiography is highly recommended.

I thought Gere was good in Mothman, he showed signs of becoming an actor at long last

Cary Grant is one the best light comedians the screen has ever seen .... and a pretty good dramatic actor too. His roles over a 30yr+ career contain some of the great performances of the last century. Suspicion, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, North By Northwest, Notorious to name but a few.

    The man is a legend!

To categorise him with the one-trick pony that is Huge Grunt is wrong, wrong, wrong!

    Ah, I feel better now.

    Oh come now Bats,

Cary Grant like Bogart, Gable and John Wayne were good at playing

Cary Grant , Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable and John Wayne.

I'm not denying they all had presence and I like Cary Grant very much.

Did he ever appear in a film where he wasn't well attired? The man was obsessed with perfection and I belive had to cope with OCD.

He was always typecast as suave and sophisticated .

Bogie's role in the African Queen was a departure from the normal character he played, admitted.

Cary Grant did not always play himself .... the devious murdering bastard he played in Suspicion (before the studio enforced changed ending) bears no relation to Devlin in Notorious or Huxley in Bringing Up Baby. All three are carefully constructed performances displaying a great acting range, considerable technique and are all completely different.

If you think his fine clothes acted for him, check out his less well dressed appearances in Arsenic and Old Lace, None But The Lonely Heart and in drag in I Was A Male War Bride. Screen acting at it's best.

Also, I fail to see how his alleged perfectionism and OCD detracts from his acting either. I wish a few more of this eras 'actors' would try and give a perfect performance like Grant instead of the sloppy rubbish we often get served up today.

    As usaual well researched.

It was notable that Grant's accent was used as the basis for Captain Scarlet although the synonym with wood stops there. I do like him honest.

I like Clint Eastwood too, where the synonym with wood I fear would need to be resurrected.

    Unfortunately I am Eastwoodian.
