One of my all time favourites. Simply excellent in "The League of Gentlemen." Anything I've ever seen him in is always worth watching because of Nigel. RIP old darling!

Time to keep your appointment with the Wicker Man...

His Alfred Jingle was the best thing in The Pickwick Papers. He went right out of character as the sweaty, vest-wearing Sergeant Major in The Virgin Soldiers. Also in The Noose, where he played the Cockney wide boy with a coat down to his ankles. One of the best megastars British cinema never had, IMO.

. . . and new thumbscrews for me . . .

No books about him but he was a stage director of some repute - his production of Relatively Speaking helped launch Alan Ayckbourn as one of this countries most successful dramatists. Denis Healey mentions him in his autobio as being as debonair off screen as on.

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

Six films to sum up Britain? surely these two fellows sum up Britain at its best, Jack Hawkins - sums up Britannia in every respect (prior to 1960 that is)

Yep, a good film, moves along nicely and you get a rare glimpse of his wife Beatrice Campbell in a major role. In some ways NP was a victim of his own talents as unlike many of his contemporaries who concentrated on either film or theatre his time was split pretty much evenly between the two. If you add this to the high rank he achieved in the army during World War II he was quite a guy. To mis-quote Roger Livesey in LOG "correction, I think N.P. held the rank"

you can imagine him being great company off screen. He would certainly be a dreamguest for dinner in my house alongside, Alistair Sim,Stanley Holloway,Margaret Rutherford,Joyce Grenfell & Kay Kendall.
