I thought John Wayne laughable as a Roman soldier. Something to the effect, 'We have killed the Son of Gawd!' Even worse, Genghis Khan? You've got to be kidding. I think he once played a German submariner as well--not sure of that. When Mr. Wayne stuck with what he was good at--shooting bad guys and Indians--he couldn't be beaten. I am not sure how popular he is with our Arizona Indians, however.

The exact line was "Trooly he was the Sarn of Gard".

It is forever etched in my brain!

What a movie "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was!

The Conqueror was another classic. I don't think ANYONE was cast well in that, least of all John Wayne as Khan.

Not a British actor, but "nice guy" Jimmy Stewart always blows me away with that sweaty, obsessive performance in Hitchcock's "Vertigo."

I have to disagree about Jimmy Stewart's performance in Vertigo. He was certainty obsessive, but that's what the part called for. Also, I like the way Hitchcock did the settings in San Francisco. I am familar with Babylon by the Bay, having lived there. I also had a DeSoto very similar to the one Jimmy drove in the film. I also had a big thing for Kim Novak, and was glad she got the part rather than Vera Miles.

I thought Jimmy was very good.

Jimmy's character being afraid of heights was perfect for San Francisco as the area has a lot of tall buildings to add to the effect.

Kim was going to be better then Vera, I agree.

Jimmy wasn't always the 'nice guy' ... check out the westerns he made with Anthony Mann.

I think the one on the left is from a chat show.

He was a very camp ballet dancer in The League of Gentlemen

I actually find the moustache more disturbing than anything else in that picture.

It's Hired to Kill from 1990. It's completely insane, but a lot better than the sort of stuff Ollie was making for Harry Alan Towers at the time. He seems to be enjoying himself in this one...

It isn't that hard to find when you cionsider the bafflingly obscure nature of most of Ollie's later stuff (I'm still looking for the trio of German films Ollie made for Menahem Golan in the mid-90s!)

Director George Stephens told Wayne to look up to the cross and say it with awe.

"Gotcha. Aw Trooly he was the Sarn of Gard."

I always prefered Stewart Granger when he was playing a swine.

But the list for "actors who make really unconvincing bad guys" must be just as long.

Gregory Peck, Johnny Mills and Jack Lemmon leap immediately to mind.
